Was thinking of using it to be a NAS box for the house.

32GB is $600.

That's a bit of a deal breaker.

Ryzen it is.

Of course that assumes you don't plan on keeping the 750 Ti in the current machine.
Is the 750 better than whatever is onboard the Ryzen?

Depending on the games you would be playing, yes. Everything I've read Tells me you would have to drop down to 720p on low to be playable. Still better than Intel IGP but not really any comparison to the 750.

Ok. After looking into Intel/DDR5 which is a bust and the advice to use my existing video card.... I'm leaning towards this.

Had to changed the motherboard to get one with some USB headers that will work with my case.

That aside, how does this look for an upgrade on my current i7-920?

Thanks to all who have responded. Much appreciated.

Looks good to me. If you can live with slower storage get a 1TB NVME WD Blue drive for $100. It's ~40% slower which you won't notice much unless you game a lot or push the machine with things like video editing.

Same WD Black SN750 SE NVME SSD in a 1 TB is only $134 and that’ll get you both decent storage space and the high performance of the WD Black series drive (plus higher capacities tend to outperform their smaller capacity counterparts due to the number of NAND chips that handle the IO at a time). I would recommend that if you can swing the extra cash.

Good call on doing 2x8GB to start instead of 4x4GB for some extra expansion capability in the future.

Modular power supplies don't add too much money do they? They are so much cleaner. That's a pretty similar build to what we did for my son at Christmas (he got 3060ti from the EVGA waitlist we put our name on a year ago). It runs great for all the games he plays.

Unless you plan to go full CableMod-style with your build, I would just opt for a semi-modular power supply so it's only the extra cables you add / remove.

Here is the updated build. I'm going to get Memory Express to assemble it for $50. Is there anything I need to know when I go to place the order?

My wife is in grad school and can get a Windows 10 license for free. (Well after paying $20k USD in tuition).

Last question are these notes on the build from partpicker:

Quote:
Note: Corsair 4000D Airflow ATX Mid Tower Case has a front panel USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type C port that can connect to the Asus PRIME X570-P ATX AM4 Motherboard USB 3.2 Gen 1 header. A separate USB 3.2 Gen 1 to USB 3.2 Gen 2 header adapter will be required.

Note: The Asus PRIME X570-P ATX AM4 Motherboard has an additional 4-pin ATX power connector but the Thermaltake Smart BX1 650 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply does not. This connector is used to supply additional 12V current to the motherboard. While the system will likely still run without it, higher current demands such as extreme overclocking or large video card current draws may require it.
Do I need to do anything about these or do I need to switch up some parts? I see that the adapters reference in note 1 are about $15 on Amazon.

For the second note, I think in almost all cases connecting the 8-pin CPU power cable provides enough power. I have a 5950X system with a 3090 that's fine with just the one cable connected.

For the first note, I believe the adapter is necessary to use the case's USB-C port because the MB you picked is missing this connector:

Switch to a modular or semi modular power supply that has the right connectors. No reason to mess around with an adapter. Plus, as I said above the modular power supplies (or semi modular) are nice because you won't have a bunch of un used cables in your case.

PCs are really not that hard to build these days. I recommend taking a stab yourself. I've done 4 for the kids now, and it's a fun project and the knowledge will help if something goes wrong one day or you want to upgrade.

The on board video still is. The rest of the CPU the new stuff from Intel is competitive and at least worth checking out.

But as you say the DDR5 premium is pretty extreme right now. A more expensive build the difference might be easier to swallow, but yeah. And I like the lower power consumption of AMD still.

My PC building knowledge is very gappy, but I got back into again with my kids's builds a few years back. I think I built one of the a cheapy Intel that wasn't upgradeable at all. The next was a Ryzen 3, and we've been able to upgrade on that for 3-4 Christmases now, and started the other on an old Ryzen 5 and same story there with being able to upgrade all along. We went to a new motherboard and case on the first one and were still able to keep most everything else.

Maybe we lucked out on getting in at the beginning of the AM4 cycle, but it's been a great ride in terms of upgrade-ability. I don't think Intel has been like that, but don't follow things closely enough to know for sure. Intel always confuses me too with the branding of the CPUs. It may well be because we bought into the AMD infrastructure, but I have no idea what the sweet spot Intel CPU is in terms of availability, price and performance, but the Ryzen choices always seem easy to buy and good value.

What’s a good price to sell an EVGA 1080ti 11GB SC2 for? I managed to get a 3090 but I need to sell this to pay for it.

Can it be sold for a % of the crypto mined with it?

That would be $0. If I was inclined to mine I’d be keeping it.
