Apparently, I have two separate blu ray players, one at each TV in my house, that both work perfectly fine (they play DVDs) but mostly refuse to play any Blu Ray disc at all.
Ones a samsung, ones a Sony.
Is there a Blu Ray player one can buy that doesn’t have issues? Am I missing an obvious reason why they might not work?
They will have a blue laser and a red laser (dvds) internally. If your dvds play but Blu-ray s don't your Blue lasers are likely worn out. They seem to wear out faster from my experience.
Have a gaming console? PS4/Xbox One work well and seem to last.

I had a Sony Blu-Ray player that just sucked at playing Blu-Rays after a while. It was the cheapest model you could buy at the time.
I bought another one and after a while the same thing happened. The 2nd one I tried to upgrade firmware but that kept failing. So I decided we'll just use the PS4 on the "main" TV and the PS3 to play Blu-Rays on the other TV.
Some bluray require firmware updates to keep reading newer discs.
Something like the PS4/5 would do this automatically, so you'd never realize that there was a change and is more likely to not run into situations like these... but then it'd be overkill in buying a PS4/5 just so you don't run into issues like firmware updates on a blu ray player.
It's possible there's a coincidence where both players blu ray lasers have borked (different than the DVD laser).
You'll have to basically diagnose each situation to nail down the specific situation and try and fix that (ie: Time and effort if fixable this way)... or look into a replacement player that doesn't have the issue (ie: Throw money at the issue).

I dont have a gaming console (sony/Microsoft). Wii U doesn’t play Blu rays as far as I know.
Are you trying blu rays from outside of North America? Most blu ray players are region locked an won't play discs from outside of the region they are bought in.

Oh, what the.
Somehow I thought blu rays were all region free. Playstation games are supposed to be region free. But there are indeed many DVD and Blu ray that are region locked.
