Promising debut album out soon from Alt-J who have opened for Wild Beasts another great UK band. I think it is out later this month or early next month. I like their sound :

Breezeblocks :

Matilda :

Tessallate :

Over the past 5 years the UK has put out the best music IMO. Also looking forward to the new XX album this spring or whenever it is out?

I love Stars, in fact I can't adequately articulate how much I love that band.

When my girlfriend I were discussing my fast food theory, Katy Perry came on the radio. So in small controlled doses I can appreciate it for it's fast food nature.

I find Stars very hit or miss. "Your Ex-Lover is Dead" is one of my favourite songs of all time, but some of their other tracks are soooooo pretentious that I find it incredibly off-putting. Other songs I really like: "Wasted Daylight", "The Calendar Girl", "Reunion", and "Look Up"

Generally speaking, I prefer songs that feature Amy Milan's vocals much more than those that feature Torquil Campbell.

Tenacious D has a new album out today. Looking forward to hearing it when I get home. Still very glad to have seen the D live. But nothing will ever beat the songs from the original HBO Series, especially Cosmic Shame, Jesus Ranch and Special Things and the original version of Tribute with the Stairway interlude.

It's the interplay of the voices. Torq's part and Amy's part that I enjoy the most. The different perspectives and almost conversational nature. Midnight Coward and Personal are two of my favorites for this reason.

That being said Take me to the Riot is probably my all time favorite.

And I agree that Torquil is the uber pretentious artist stereotype. I stopped following him on Twitter during the last federal election. He was frankly being super annoying. I mean I don't agree with Harper all the time either, but he was just being super disrespectful of even the position of PM.

What songs in particular grind your gears? He Lied About Death?

edit: I probably enjoy being a little bit pretentious.

Oh man.. That is my number 3 all time favourite song. I love the chaos that it descends into.

I find that I listen to a lot of stuff that most people don't love, but if you like punk/pop-punk/garage type stuff, or you're just open to new things:
Toys That Kill: Fambly 42

I can't think of any other 2012 releases from bands I listen to regularly off the top of my head but here are some really good releases from the last few year:
RVIVR - The Joester Sessions Collection

Good Luck - (Can't remember the album)

Off With Their Heads - In Desolation

The Slow Death - Born Ugly, Got Worse

Night Birds - S/T

I'm bumping this thread because of something I saw today that fits with the music dying in 2012 idea. Watch this video and really listen to the lyrics. It's is a gem.

Agreed. IMO, trance has lost a bit of a step (maybe because I am focusing on other genres more), but the quality of techno and tech house has gone through the roof. It's a great time to be an EDM fan.

For you music buffs is there a specific genre for rap/techno songs? I know there is various kinds of techno and sub genres so I don't want to offend anyone as I don't know what they are. I am really digging techno with an underlay of rap. Some of the (dub step)? Skrillex collaborations or heart beath by childish gambino. Stuff like that I am really digging it but I can't find very much of it.

If someone could point me to a "genre" I should be looking towards or even some songs/artists I would appreciate it. Makes my long drives on the highway fun

Check out Knife Party:

Dizzie Rascal and Tinie Tempah are two other rappers that usually work a lot with Electronic artists however their not exactly the same style as that Childish Gambino track (which is awesome btw).

I think you should ask the hip hop thread peeps for some direction because that style seems to be more Rap with an Electronic underlay rather then vice versa. I really can't think of any big names that do that type of music regularly outside of what I posted.

The new Liars album is great. Also, I read earlier that someone said Sleigh Bells suck live... just saw them two weeks ago and I have to very strongly disagree.

Music died in the early 90's, it was called grunge.
