So one of the coaches is still getting set up for the drill, but Gio and Tkachuk are already lined up, both in a ready stance. Tkachuk keeps tapping the puck closer to him. Gio pushes the puck back in between them. This happens a good 5-6 times.

They weren't smiling or joking around either.
To be fair, half the team's GAF meter resides in those two men.

Really getting the feel from various comments that the Flames are taking the tourney quite seriously and are motivated for it. Other rosters might have a flakier attitude because of the situation surrounding it. This is where you want all your 'character' pick ups to pay off.

Gustafsson getting a full camp with the team could help him settle into an important role here and be that PP producer. I've found so often that deadline rentals don't really gain traction with new teams in such a short window, but this practice time may give them the opportunity to mesh him with the PP and get more of his offensive game.

Players miss games with the flu or injuries all the time.

The only difference to us will be "unable to participate in pivotal game 5 due to lower-body injury" vs. "unable to participate in pivotal game 5".

Yeah but getting a lower body injury isn't contagious/infectious. Next thing will be a whole line missing for a crucial point. I hope not but it seems inevitable doesn't it?

Looks like Ward is giving the "black aces" an opportunity to earn a spot these first few days.

Ryan Pike @RyanNPike
#Flames head coach Geoff Ward noted in his chat with the media that they haven't yet got a roster composition in mind for Phase 4. Wants to give everybody a chance to show what they can do in first 3-4 days before drilling down on anything.

The groupings seemed too odd to be happenstance. Would be nicer to know exactly what is going on- still plenty of time for someone who has tested positive to convalesce and return to the fold.

That being said, not good luck (or a good look...) that we're already forced to modify practices.

Not if all the players coming into camp positive finish their isolation and recovery during camps and the integrity of the bubble is well maintained with vigorous testing.

In a few weeks there should be no source from which new cases can sprout up. Thats the point of the current timeline and comprehensive list of rules for the bubble.

It shouldn't be inevitable if everything is being carried out as planned.

Right now is different because essentially all the players traveled recently from various places.

I think these training camps are also going to act as a screening period. They'll identify all infected parties during these camps and none of them will get into the bubble - and that's the biggest piece. That bubble needs to locked down.

It may mean some players miss the qualifying round, but that is unavoidable. The interesting thing will be will the NHL allow players who are positive at the conclusion of camp to rejoin their teams once they do test negative? Or is the bubble sealed at that stage?

I hope a comment like this means the regular roster has some spots that are there for the taking.

Given the fact we only need to make 4 cuts, two of which are likely going to be Mackey and a goalie, it’s not unreasonable to take the comment as such. Pretty good chance Froese is another one cut as he is older and wasn’t called up throughout the season. I know they liked his season and wanted to call him up but we have no developmental ties to the 29yo.

IMO there is really only 2 spots on the regular squad that might be there for the taking as I think the following is pretty well nailed down, barring injuries:

Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm
Tkachuk-Backlund-Mangiapane
Lucic-Ryan-Dube
Bennett

Gio-Brodie
Hanifin-Andersson
Forbort-Gustafsson

Rittich
Talbot

I don’t see many scenarios where these guys aren’t all dressed for game 1 so it seems there might be some forward spots open.

Wondering if the Flames are having a Covid group and non Covid group. Or a high risk, no risk groups. The potentially infected players still skate and practice but on their own.

Would be nice to see Phillips or Gawdin snag that 11/12th spot with impressive play. Sets the stage for next season and moving forward.

If they can't it would be good to see Czarnik come in with more consistent play after a hot stint in the A and be a productive depth player.

I can't see running the risk of bringing anyone into that environment who they feel may be compromised. That would be the height of stupidity.

If the tests are positive or even inconclusive, those players don't come to the arena. Thats my guess.

(not saying either of today's absentees fit that description)

Ugh that's terrible news, and not good as he was around the whole time with the earliest core @ the dome including some coaches.

You wonder how this pans out...

I'm guessing....a disqualification and hopefully the #1 pick.

Look, selfishly I want this to go really well and for Hockey to return and if the Flames dont win it all I'd rather it go to some nothingburger team out East.

At the same time, the pragmatic skepticist in me who often over-powers the merest shreds of hope I foolishly attempt to retain...sees no way that this isnt a colossal disaster.

This isnt soccer. This isnt baseball. This is hockey. I do not see how to realistically play this game amidst a highly contagious virus.

Geoff Ward has never been a head coach for a NHL training camp. The starting line-up is pretty set as the Flames do not have a bunch of NHL depth.

The flock of AHL guys would have to have an outstanding 7 game exhibition camp to earn a spot (in the bottom 6) over a veteran in a regular camp.
At some point (sooner than later) the NHL guys would want to say stop messing around and let's focus on winning game #
