Gives the arena and staff a chance to work out any issues as well with games that are just exhibition since they will be hosting so many games in a day

You would think they will want to keep Connor away for Gio, especially the last few seconds of the game.

On one hand it feels like a distraction game ... but then on the other I think you increase the chance of getting the team amped up for a Winnipeg series with added intensity.
Playing say Arizona may just result in a go through the motions contest making game one a mess.

I think this is exactly why all (or as many as possible at least) of the games are between rivals. With only one warm-up game, this is the best way to amp the intensity up as quickly as possible - get everyone's blood flowing,

Emotions or not, these guys have 4 months of game rust on them, and haven’t taken a regular body check etc since March. They need some sort of game action to get back into that groove, and really one game no matter how intense, won’t be enough to get rust off.
The play in round comes up on you quick. No one on any team will be really ready for Game 1 either, so you hope to win that coin flip. By the time some of these guys get even basic game feet under them it may be Game 3 and by that time you can add the pressure of having gone through all this bubble stuff, for it to be all worthless, if game 2 got away and you are going home until November in 60 minutes if you don’t win.

The starting goalie for that game will tell a lot. Seems 50/50 at this point

I bet that both goalies will play the exhibition game.

I doubt it. You have to give your #1 goalie (Rittich) a full game to get ready.

No way Rittich isn’t the starter unless he comes to camp unprepared (No way that guy had ice in his veins), injured or absolutely bombs.
Like others have said, Francis likes to stir up a story.

I like it.
Will get the team in a battle mindset.
I don't see Winnipeg vs Vancouver giving them the same wake up call.
As long as there's no injuries or suspensions, I think this is good for the team, win or lose.

And we get to see the Keeper of the Code. Can't wait to see #44 show us just how truly superior he is.
Am I right in remembering that Conner has struggled with flu and/or other deadly diseases the last couple of years? Or has it been three straight years? I wonder how he will handle COVID after playing 40 minutes a game day after day after day.

Kassian is gonna do something stupid in this game, isn't he. I'll bet he gets himself suspended for the first couple games of the play-in round.

Then your back up doesn’t get a taste of game action until an elimination game, and likely late in said game.

The crossovers give him immunity.
