It was also Kournikova's only grand slam SF at 17.

the Williams era began a couple years after this, and anyone else who won SW19 not named Williams was also a power server/hitter. on grass Hingis' brainy game unfortunately has a tough time overcoming brute force. it's more surprising that she doesn't own any French Opens given her playing style.

In seriousness it was definitely the power tennis thing that happened, which was unfortunate because Hingis's style was definitely more fun to watch.
She never won the French because it's still primarily a defense-first, endurance-oriented athelete's game there, and that was never really who Hingis was. She was a cerebral player. That used to be how women won on grass and hard courts. Then, suddenly, it wasn't.

Today would have been the Men's final, we all know Nadal's greatest win here (2008) and Djokovic (2019). Fed fans what is your favorite championship from the Grass King? Also Berdych was so close to having the single greatest title ever as he took out Federer and Djokovic in back to back rounds before losing to Nadal in the final. If he won in 2010 that would have been the ultimate to take out the big 3 in 3 straight rounds.

Got to be 2009 vs Roddick, by the slimmest of margins surpasses Pistol Pete as slam king. That was also kind of the final hurrah of Roddick’s generation before the Big 4 era. Also, A-Rod is a year younger than Roger. That is how completely unnatural it is to still have Fed competing into 2020 and beyond.

I also enjoyed 2012 even though the final wasn’t that close, it was tiny racquet Federer’s last great performance. If only he could have followed up with the gold medal the month after.

I was thinking it would be the 09 title, I was pulling so hard for Roddick. It's too bad Roddick never won Wimbledon, had he played anyone else that day in 09 he wins.
The 12 final its crazy to me that the crowd was 50% cheering for Fed, in England with no British male champion for so long and they still cheer Fed. Just goes to show he is the most popular player ever, they wouldn't do that for Nadal , definitely not Djokovic either.

I can't say I was pulling for Roddick in the '09 final, but I certainly wouldn't have been unhappy if he would have won it. He gave it his all on that day and almost pulled it off. It was an enjoyable way to spend 5 hours on a Sunday.

Roddick led 6-2 in the 2nd set tiebreak and lost 6 points in row. The 6-5 point...

It's been in doubt for a while, it seems to me. New York is doing better than it was, obviously, but the USA in general is a dicey proposition. Plus, what are the rules about self-isolation after they leave?

US Open ends Sept 13, French Open begins Sept 26. If you had to isolate for 14 days after returning from the US, then the US Open champion wouldn't be able to play day 1 of the French Open.

because it's 2020, if the pandemic or social/political strife don't get in the way of the US Open, I fully expect some other calamity to occur during the late summer. my money is on Chitauri invasion.
