Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
Smith will start in goal tomorrow in Vancouver, but not certain how long he’ll play. Smith will also start Saturday. #Flames

Darn that stinkin' nepotist, Guluckson. How is he related to so many players!

I think Gully (and Jerrard) are coaches who favor players that they've coached before. Possibly he see's it as being less of a transition due to them already having a partial understanding of the system.

We saw it with Gulutzen talking about the familiarity he had with Bart when he was signed.

Same with Grossmann.

We saw it get Chris Higgins a pto.

I think the accusation was that both Grossman and Bartkowski are former players of Gulutzan's, therefore they received jobs that they didn't deserve.

If it was due to familiarity and confidence in knowing what kind of work they do, that's a management decision. If it's because he is their friend, that's nepotism.

Although the use of the word is correct, I think the charge is probably off base. Likely a case of comfort in familiarity over the guy giving a job to a friend that he knows should go to somebody else. Not a typical move for a new head coach in one of the most fickle careers out there.

Gulutzan says Smith gets the start in the last 2 preseason games.

Don't think Gulutzan has any relatives on the team so cries of nepotism make no sense
"or friends"

I hope they are not thinking about sending down Janko. I’m hoping that they are just getting those 4th line guys some practice time. Argh... looks a lot like the lineup that couldn’t get it done in the playoffs

Bennett was off to a great start this year but sticking him with Brouwer already is just plain stupid and demeaning... Brouwer just isn’t good enough to play with Bennett. I like Gulutzan but come on man! Gulutzan is too stubborn and pig headed sometimes. As for the senior guys on the team, they get too much respect from the coaches.

I really hope to see Janko and Lazar in the opening day lineup and give them a decent chance to make a difference and let Gillies have a shot for god sakes!

I'm uneasy about that 3RW and 6D. Am I just overreacting?

But I feel like we learned from last season that Bennett needs to be surrounded by better players to help him truly thrive and produce. Brouwer feels like a step back. Pretty sure Lazar would have more jump at least. Did this coaching staff learn anything from what didn't work last season?

Oh well I'll sit here and pray for a pleasant surprise come next wednesday. But given GG's history here of opening night roster decisions......
pickle rick!

with the poise jankowski has shown thus far i would be really really tempted to let bennett run wild on the top line. move ferland down to 3LW and move versteeg over to his strong side at 3RW and move stajan to 4LW and play lazar in the middle. this way the only guy playing his offwing is bennett, and i'm sure he would relish it, oh and frolik which is a no brainer.

gaudreau - monahan - bennett

tkachuck - backlund - frolik

ferland - jankowski - versteeg

stajan - lazar - brouwer

looks balanced to me, that top line has some serious punch, and that third line has some sneaky good skill to it.

Aaron Vickers @AAVickers
Cramarossa released from PTO, said Gulutzan. He also said there would be more news on it later. #Flames

I wonder if he accepted an AHL deal?

Rickle Pick!

I keep forgetting about Jankowski potentially slotting in opening night.

Does Versteeg prefer LW or RW I wonder? He was slotted on right side a lot last year.

As great an idea as Janks at center is, I feel like the team wants Bennett at center even more. One will have to be moved to the wing.

Jankowski shoots left, and given that Bennett is preferred by coaching and mgmt at C, and Steeger has experience at RW I'd do

Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Jankowski - Bennett - Versteeg
Stajan/Lazar - Stajan/Lazar - Brouwer

Given how lethal Janko's shot has looked, that might be a pretty productive third line.
