This, not because of Cena, but because the movie was so unnecessary and just stupid.

Just watched "The Long Kiss Goodnight", and wow, it's actually a pretty wild, weird and messed up film. In fascinating way more than good, but also fairly entertaining. The nineties were a different time for sure. I would totally watch a sequel.

As for the LOTR films, they're fine otherwise but the battle of Helms deep especially makes my head hurt really bad. You can really tell that no one who wrote it / planned it had any idea at all about actual medieval battles, unlike Tolkien.

In general that's the one thing I dislike the most about the films, how they made all the main military leaders basically just boastful with no real plans, ever. Then again, pre-firearm battles in Hollywood movies are stupid and bad roughly 100% of the time, so Jackson isn't exactly alone in this. At least the speeches are good, and charge of Rohirrim does kind of rule.

Long Kiss Goodnight seems like a movie primed for a remake. Not that I don’t like the original, I just think it has good remake potential. Put a young(ish) star in the lead role, give it a bigger budget, hell you could even cast Sam Jackson in the same role again. Then it could get proper sequels too.

The Protege was a fun romp. Samuel L Jackson, Michael Keaton, Maggie Q.
Your basic video game assasin flick. Mindless fun, 6.5/10.

Shang Chi was a very typical Marvel movie. Likeable characters, decent pacing, tons of cliches and familiar tropes, solid action, kind of weak villain, visually stunning.

Overall I liked it. I think if it was a paint by numbers movie about a bland white hero it would have been weaker but the Chinese background of the characters was utilized well and made typical superhero fare a bit more interesting.

Spoiler!

I didn't want to engage in objectifying anyone, but I was curious as to whether my comment was off the cuff, or if I truly believed it. It turns out that I must think that Michelle Pfeiffer is at her best when she is slightly frazzled.

I agree, but she looked great in it. Considering it was Pfeiffer, Nicholson and Spader you would think that it would age well, but the pacing and dialogue is pretty cringy and weak.

Married to the Mob makes me wonder how Matthew Modine slipped through the cracks to become a leading man. It was the movie that cemented that Pfeiffer could carry a movie all on her own. Shout out to Dean Stockwell.

Modine is indeed an interesting one. I can't think of a single standout role, and after looking up his filmography i'm even more unimpressed

Let Him Go with Costner and Diane Lane. That movie could have been so much better unfortunately the villains were nothing but caricatures with no motivation. Don’t waste your time.

Beg steal or borrow a copy of Birdy from '84, directed by Alan Parker (Mississippi Burning, The Commitments, Angel Heart, Midnight Express) with a teenage (?) Modine and Nick Cage, it is a great movie that broke both of them as actors

Sounds about par for expectations.

It does impress me how Marvel creates consistently enjoyable content despite the number of weak or bland villains (particularly in debut/origin movies). I think it's in the characters, world building, and their knack for quips and humour without derailing the gravity of the plot.

12 Angry Men was on PBS last night. WOW! Strong cast, masterfully directed. It deserves the accolades.

the 50's movie with Henry Fonda? it's a time capsule of the change in acting going on in New York at the time, the take over of method acting, brilliant film although from a legal point of view terrible, a bunch of guys allow a probably guilty murderer off because one of them has a gut feeling!!!
