Oh man, those are both amazing. I'm a huge Marx Brothers fan myself. Duck Soup might be the pinnacle of their writing for its political commentary, but I still think the best show they ever did was A Night at the Opera. It still has one of my favorite 2-person routines.

After just recently watching North by Northwest, Rear Window, and Chinatown I feel pretty silly having not seen these classics before.

I just recorded Lawrence of Arabia: Director's Cut. For someone that knows, is it markedly different or better than the theatrical cut?
It's longer...not sure that it's a whole lot better. It's a pretty long film already, and the editing helps with pacing.

Still, one of my all-time favorites. They don't make films like that anymore.

The one thing that annoys me about threads or conversations like this is the inevitable pride people seem to have about not watching a popular film or franchise.

"I've never seen *insert popular movie* and I'll never watch it!"

It's the movie hipster version of hating popular bands.

There's a reason these movies have fans. They're typically pretty damn good. Not watching something because it's popular is a stupid reason not enjoy a good movie. You don't lose your street cred because you watched Harry Potter or Captain America.

https://www.afi.com/afis-100-years-100-movies/

Lots of the ones I haven't seen are from the 30's and 40's, so it's not shocking, but some of them are Chaplin or Hitchcock films that I really should sit down and watch, just for reference (Double Indemnity, North by Northwest, City Lights, Modern Times)

Some notables that I have not yet seen:

17. The African Queen
21. The Grapes of Wrath
27. Bonnie and Clyde
30. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
39. Doctor Zhivago
41. West Side Story
57. The Third Man
64. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
69. Shane
88. Easy Rider

I guess my question is, which of these are "must watch". Which should I start with?
The Third Man is a must see if only for all the modern movies you will recognise stolen camera angles and scenes from it, pretty much any film that ends up in a sewer chase refers to it from Blade to The Fugative.

The Africa Queen is a tour de force and has, I have no doubt, inspired/been remade badly by the Rock and Emily Blunt in Jungle Cruise

The rise of CGI has made blockbuster franchise movies more a technical acheivement than much else, it has made for some great movies but also a vast number of lazy badly written, poorly acted rubbish, the Fast and the Furious is hugely popular but absolute rubbish, most of Star Wars is also pretty awful, I enjoyed most of the various Marvel films and a chunk of Harry Potter's as well, but they were well written and well acted as well as CGI'd, good writing and good acting are still in the end the only things that make a good movie

Any and all Star Wars.
Pretty much any superhero-related movie of the last decade… which seems to be most of them.
Citizen Cane.
Toy Story.
Blade Runner. Tried to watch twice (was told a certain cut was better…) but fell asleep due to total boredom.

Actually I was referring Citizen Cane, the 3 hour bio epic of Mr. Peanut. It starred Michael Caine of all people. I can't believe you've never heard of it, it's a real classic.

Too many to list. I find almost all blockbuster/highly rated movies incredibly boring so I don’t even bother watching.

Memento is a great movie but make sure you don't have any distractions, one of those movies you need to pay attention to. Well worth the time investment IMO.
Braveheart is an incredible piece of cinema.

Yes, Mel Gibson is a horrible human. He’s also an exquisite director, and this is easily his finest achievement.

The performances, the cinematography, the Scottish landscapes, James Horner’s score, the practical effects, JAMES HORNER’S SCORE.

For real. You’ll be humming the music for weeks - the only reason James didn’t win an Oscar that year is because he was also nominated for Apollo 13, and he split his own vote.

Braveheart is the movie Gladiator wishes it was, and I really enjoy Gladiator.

Cough, cough.

City Lights is a masterpiece. I'd still start with Treasure of Sierra Madre.

I largely agree with you with a couple caveats:

1. Anything Harry Potter....I get that its just not my jam, but I really didnt like those movies.

2. Avatar.

I dont get why people liked that movie on anything other than a technical level or why they're making a million more of them. It is the cinematic equivalent of a 'shiny object.'

The first movie is a decent Point Break with cars and Fast 5 is an excellent action heist movie. The rest are not worth watching.

I would say I have not watched about 80% of badly-reviewed blockbusters. I've never seen any Transformers movie, for example.

On the classics, I've seen about 80% of the AFI top 100. It's kind of hard to tell sometimes which "classics" hold up and which don't before you watch them.
