Default Fun team building volunteer opportunities in Calgary?

Our ~20 person team at work is looking for a fun team building volunteer opportunity that doesn’t have a multi month waiting list like serving meals at some of the big shelters in town.

What are some good ideas?

Food bank is always willing to take groups I think.

Food bank was my first thought. Seems like a fun thing where everyone works together and you can see your contribution in terms of a stack of boxed goods or meals or whatever you do. Do they typically have short or no wait lists?

I volunteered last week at Brown Bagging 4 Calgary Kids - they make lunches for school kids who don't have a lunch or enough lunch. They and their community partners currently make 3800 lunches every school day. I don't think they can handle 20 in their location, but perhaps give them a call and see. https://bb4ck.org/

At my old work, we used to volunteer at the Calgary Reads Book sale, helping set out/sort books. That's a very limited time period, just around a week in May, but it was lots of fun.

I would usually join my old company's charity events and the Food Bank was probably the most fun and team-oriented.

Maybe try doing something fun instead of volunteering.

We've done the volunteering for "team building " and it's terrible and nobody builds any team work or gets to know each other. Maybe volunteer as a regular activity instead of cheaping out for team building.

Whatever it is, just make sure it's during business hours and not extracurricular. So glad I'm not in the corporate world anymore as I loathe contrived activities like team building.

The only one I remember thinking was cool was my boss telling all of us Friday afternoon was going to be a surprise team building activity. Turns out it was the afternoon off for everyone. That was great.

People have too many commitments and social obligations in life as is. Adding one more thing is pretty rude. Taking something off their plate would actually be appreciated (like time off so they can spend it with people they would choose to be with and not people they're already forced to be with 45 hours per week).

Our company gives us volunteer days during work hours which is pretty nice. A ton of us go to the food bank, or the 'paint the town' program in the summer.

Personally I don't find them to be as much team building events, as they are ways to give back to the community which IMO is way more important.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS! @RanchoVignola is providing us with a monetary donation this weekend (Nov24-26) for every hour worked by one of our volunteers. We need close to 30 volunteers to make it happen. Can you help? Contact Carolyn at 403-948-0063 or volunteers@airdriefoodbank.com.

There's always the pathway and parks cleanups - but I think those don't happen until Spring/Summer.

I'll throw in another vote for the Food Bank. They're a very seriously needed organization at this moment in Calgary and they're going to be even more needed in a month.

Theres also Inn From The Cold where you can make sandwiches for the homeless at the Drop-In centre.
