I think it's about time this series received the dedicated thread treatment, especially after the last episode 'ronny/lilly'. My goodness, what a trip.
For those unfamiliar, the series is a dark comedy on HBO starring Bill Hader, Henry Winkler, and Stephen Root. It's about a special ops operative turned hitman turned acting student. It's an incredible blend of dark, surreal, and humor, and while it balances these elements fantastically it also jars you by switching between them so viciously.
It's become a highlight of my Sunday night viewing, and it should for you too.
It's currently in the middle of Season 2. All episodes are available on Crave. Get caught up solely for the insanity that is Season 2, Episode 5: ronny/lilly.

the episode prior the scene with Winkler and Hader that ends with Winkler going to get his books to bill Barry for the session was just a masterclass in performance too
I get a grin I can't wipe off my face anytime Hank (Carrigan) shows up on screen

funny I read an article with hader on this and he said this episode reminded him of Pine Barrens and the "Teddy" Episode from Atlanta where you're like "what the hell is going on".
Pine Barrens and Teddy are my two favourite episodes of those respective series and this one is probably my favourite from barry. Absurdism is sometimes really fun, especially if done well.
Just finished binging the first 2 seasons, and it's a really mixed bag for me. Barry, Hank, Fuches, and Cousineau are all awesome, but Sally and everyone else in the acting class just bring nothing to the table IMO. I find myself skipping through a lot of the acting class scenes since they're so boring. Hopefully they move away from that next season with Cousineau learning the truth behind Barry

I really like the acting classes. The fact the characters are flat and dimwitted adds to the juxtaposition between Barry's two lives. Sally, especially, is supposed to come across as totally self-absorbed and clueless. The fact that Barry is in love with her and can't see that is a big part of the show. He's doing all these awful things to stay in the theater group (and maintain his relationship with Sally), but he can't see that Sally is awful.
