The reviews are kind of all over the map, but the one big concern which was the actor who plays solo, seems to have gone away.

I was thinking of this last night.

What if when Star Wars came out in 1977, and it had gotten the avengers treatment. But cheesier with lots of capes.

Would we have seen, and borrowing liberally from books,

Star Wars (1977) - we know the plotlines

Star Wars - Solo (1978)

Star Wars - Rogue One (1978)

Star Wars - (The Force Unleashed) 1979

Star Wars 2 - The Empire strikes back 1980

Star Wars - Dark Lord the rise of Darth Vader - 1981

Star Wars - Bounty Hunter Tales 1981
Star Wars - Lando (1982)
Star Wars - Dak 1982

1983 - Return of the Jedi
1985 - Star Wars Leia a Princess tale

Star Wars Phase 2

Based purely on talking to my kids and some of their friends, I wonder if this is the movie where we see the evidence of Star Wars fatigue at the box office.

Right now it’s tracking to open with about $150m. Maybe $175-200m if the reviews are solid.

The fatigue thing has been said so many times. Star Wars, comic books, sequels. Yet they’re still killing it at the box office, setting records.

This will likely do Rogue One numbers. Maybe a bit less. Rogue had TFA and was riding that hot streak.

I don’t think Han Solo is a huge draw for the kids but Star Wars is Star Wars so it’ll have an audience. I think there’s also a lot of hate and skepticism from older fans. But with good reviews this movie will make its money.

It's hard to actually get fatigue when you're typically talking about 2-3 movies per year.

In a perfect world, we could all wear capes and fanny packs without shame.

Also as far as SW goes we won't see another movie after this one until Dec 2019.

Not sure how to link these videos but Harrison Ford crashes Alden's Solo interview:

I like the comment he makes to him at the end, Ford approves!

The review embargo was lifted today. So, far 72% positive on Rotten Tomatoes with an average score of 67% on Metacritic.

That's about what I expected. Safe to say it'll probably make Rogue One money, or close to it at least. It'll have stiff competition though since it's opening only a few days after Deadpool 2. It'll be neck and neck between those two over the next two or three weeks...at least until Jurassic World opens.

My gut tells me it is off 20% from Rogue One money at the domestic box office. Still big money

I have this thought that the gate will start slower then Rogue one and this movie will really have to depend on word of mouth and reviews to make up the gate.

Movie was sitting at about 6.2 on imdb but now the rating has been pulled. I've never seen that happen before.

The few reviews I've read seem to suggest that it's the least Star Wars of the Star Wars films. Which isn't a bad thing. I think that was what made Rogue One successful...while it fed directly into the series, of course, it was a much different type of movie. Solo isn't supposed to feed directly into the series and is more of an Indiana Jones adventure through the seedy underbelly of the universe.

Reviews seem all over the place. Plenty say it's fun (71% RT) but a more than a few say it's terrible. Lowest rated Star Wars movie since Attack of the Clones as even Revenge of the Sith was 79%.

So is this a situation where we love RT because it supports what some thought or we dismiss it because it doesn’t agree with what we think? I’m never sure.

Not having seen the movie, the reviews look fairly balanced. To be quite honest the only movie where I felt like I needed to outright dismiss the Rotten Tomatoes reviews was TLJ. The critics praise was out of control and it was treated as some deep masterpiece and accomplishment in cinema. I felt cheated, as the actual product was nothing like that. Enough people I talked to felt the same way about the TLJ, so even if many liked it, I can't see how a group of critics could come to such a unanimous consensus.

With the Solo reviews, I feel like I'm likely to see something pretty close to the aggregate of the reviews. I guess if I go, and it's some masterpiece, I'll feel like the reviews are way off.
