Just curious, what do you do in your volunteering? I regret not being more into music when I was in University.

I just bought a copy of Prince's Controversy album this weekend that was originally from the CJSW station library (CJSW tags, WB Promo stamps). It was kind of cool knowing that a CJSW DJ played this exact record over the airwaves 30 ago and it made me curious about what it was like back then.

30 years ago CJSW was down in the basement. Now they have a great space on the top floor at Mac Hall.

http://cjsw.com/volunteer/

Volunteers help with all kinds of tasks, depending on your interests and availability.

The most common task is helping with the library - there are over 70,000 items in the library. They are organized by genre and format. We are currently cataloguing every recording in a database. About 100-200 new releases arrive every week, and have to be reviewed, labelled and added to the playlist.

I have worked on the web-site adding events to the calendar.

We get to attend many festivals and events promoting CJSW.

You can learn how to work in the production studio, recording stingers and PSAs.

Many bands come to perform live in the studio.

The Funding Drive is important and requires many volunteers to take pledges on the phone.

Ultimately, volunteers will be trained on production and on-air programming. I'm going through this now. I will likely get to produce some fill-in shows, then eventually host my own show.

It is a great environment with helpful and supportive people. They now have Saturday volunteer hours for those that work Monday to Friday. I look forward to it every week and it is as much fun as you would expect it to be. Great place to meet people with diverse musical tastes. We have so many different shows for different genres and ethnic groups.

I love the new design, but I'm running out of shelf space for mugs though.

Hopefully they're able to get podcasts up and running this year. I miss having access to the archives, and it's tough to listen to my favourite shows live.

I'm not sure if there is a Bhangra/Bollywood show currently.

I love CJSW, been a volunteer there before, but I can't believe it's 2015 and CJSW still doesn't require their DJs to post their playlists. It should be a requirement of all DJs if they're to continue hosting shows.

Some do on personal blogs.

With the new website all this should improve.

I think it has been tricky to compile playlists because we play so much Canadian/local/obscure music. We still play vinyl and cassettes. It would require a lot of manual data entry.

Every show has a blog section on CJSW.com, I have trouble believing that DJ's would have to put in much time and effort to keep a list of what they're playing while on air and post it to their show blog.

I have asked the same question before - some DJs do a program on the fly and take requests or grab music from the library.

The station does have to keep track to see that the playlist and cancon rules are being followed.

My complaint boils down to this, many times listening to CJSW at home or especially in the car I'll hear a song I like. Sometimes I have to wait for 5-6 more songs for the DJ to come back on air, only to have them rush through the track list with no real idea of what song was what (if they even tell you at all). Sure I can phone, but that isn't always an option. If your running a station that's playing songs I'm most likely to hear only once on your station, you need to have a platform to get that info to your listeners. I really find that there is little to no excuse to not be doing this, even with the tech CJSW has currently. DJ's should be made to do it as part of having a show.

If jotted down the DJ would need to take 15 minutes after the show to type it up and post it. If they're typing it out as they go, it's as simple as copy and paste. Better yet have a pre built excel sheet open on the computer in the DJ booth like the one below.

__ARTIST__________TRACK_____
1.
2.
3.
ect....

It'd literally take 5-10 seconds to jot/type that info down for each track. Doesn't seem like it would take much effort at all, even if they're programming on the fly.

http://beatroute.ca/2015/10/14/cjsw-...dge-at-a-time/

The money raised from the past several funding drives has allowed CJSW to make major improvements. Along with continuously advancing their studio with state-of-the-art equipment, the station has purchased an 18,000-watt transmitter, a live-performance space, and even a website for podcasting, allowing online playback of every single on-air broadcast. They aim for every show to be available via podcast in the near future.

“CJSW is trying to see if our amazing listeners can make our funding drive the most successful in community radio history for the fourth time in a row,” continues Atkinson.

“If we successfully raise over $250,000, we will be building a mobile radio setup that will allow us to broadcast live from anywhere in the community. Unlike commercial radio stations, we won’t be using these on-location events to hype up, say, a new model of car with free hot dogs. Instead, we’re going to apply the creativity and passion we have for great radio and experiment to see how this setup can truly make next level radio.”

Just want to say I've been a long time listener(20 years) and supporter. Still use my CJSW travel mug daily from roughly 10 years ago. Really miss Sideshow Sid though...
