Default A thread for Volunteers and Nonprofit orgs in Calgary/ Southern Alberta

Calgary historically has a very high rate of volunteerism and activity for non-profit orgs. However I don't see this kind of thread in my searches of Calgarypuck... so maybe it is time to start one.

given a recent event to a Calgary hockey league, I stumbled on this webinar:

Are these the same considerations you make when donating to any given community cause?

Was recently Volunteering at a casino fundraiser.

Apparently there is discussion that the Greyeagle casino has applied to run 24hrs. If Grey eagle casino gets approval, then it appears all the other Casino halls will opt to 24 hr hour operation. Has anyone else heard this rumour?

The current casino hours (with 3 am close) are challenging enough to fill with volunteers. Does anyone feel 24 casino operations will be time to take the volunteers out of the casino (replaced with paid staff)?

You can't address the problem if the rest of the city doesn't know there is a problem.

This 2 page outline suggests how your org can advocate ( even lobby). Not enough ice time? not enough soccer fields? Some omething with a provincial jurisdiction? Sometimes you and your org have to let folks know there is a problem.

#5 Prioritize your resources

#3 Back up your ask with facts
#2 Try to align your issue with the government’s narrative
#1 Don’t just present the problem, identify a solution

I did one of these last year. We had a hard time finding volunteers for the 3am shift, I assume an even later shift would be very hard to do. You almost have to take 1-2 days off work depending on what days of the week you get.
