Steal only until you find out what he wants for his new contract demands.
If its beyond what he is worth or if he is determined to become a UFA end of next year than it is a reasonable trade.

Blais would probably be equivalent to Dube in a trade like that.
Blais last two seasons:
GP: 76, G: 14, P: 28, 0.37 PPG
Dube last two seasons:
GP: 96, G: 17 P: 38, 0.39 PPG
Dube + 2nd ... I probably would have done it. Buchnevich fills a big hole for this roster, and isn't that much older than Dube (3 years) but is much more proven.

It's a fair bit for signing rights, even if they are only RFA rights. Now he pretty much calls the shots on contract negotiations, knowing they need to sign him.

Rangers received a bad return because they got a forward with toughness.
Can guarantee the Rangers are clearing space for Eichel.

He is also 1 year from UFA. If he doesn't like the deals or the acquiring team he can just ride the arbitration award to UFA.

Easily. Legit RW option. I guess depends on the contract.

Buch is an unsigned RFA they weren't close on. Risto is signed for another year. Difference between signing rights and a player under contract.

Big contracts coming up next offseason, didn't want to commit term to Buch and Buch wanted more than 2 years.

There’s no way the Rangers weren’t targeting Blais. This seems awfully cheap which any team should have been able to outbid. But there’s no other explanation. St.Louis just found their updated Tarasenko.

Would Buchnevich have re-signed here? I doubt it.
I wouldn't trade Dube + 2nd for a short-term rental.

Not me. Need more ELC drafted and developed players that project like Dube.

I don't think the Flames have a current comparable to Blais.
Blais is more like a young Garnet Hathaway. Forth line balls to wall who will chip in 15-20 points

This is the exact kind of deal that the Flames should be in on and shouldn't be getting outbid on. Injecting a player like this to the Flames top 6 would go a very long way to adding some serious pop. Buchnevich is hardly savior material, but if the comparable deal from Calgary is Dube and a 2nd this year, you'd have to think you do that every day of the week.
Something is just wrong if our GM is just consistently unable to get in on anything for players like this. Do something Brad!

The trade is for one year of team control, so that has to be taken into account. How much is Buchnevich as a rental worth?
He's a really good player. I would've loved to getting him, but I would've expected losing him at the end of the season.

I would do Dube+2nd but only if you could get him inked beyond next season.
1 year rentals aren't what this team needs.
