Flames Friedman: Flames have begun extension talks with Gaudreau & Eichel speculation

https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article...season-begins/

Quote:
6. Calgary has begun extension discussion with Johnny Gaudreau. This is purely my guess, but Flames probably have to jump over Matthew Tkachuk’s $7 million per season. He’s at $6.75 million now.

Also guesses that Calgary is one of the teams on Eichel:

Quote:
10. There were rumours Jack Eichel backed away from the disc replacement surgery and would consider a fusion instead, but several sources refuted that. Not true. There was a time I thought a trade might happen sooner rather than later, but after the expansion draft looks more likely. Who’s in there? My guess is Anaheim, Calgary, Minnesota and Vegas, with Boston, the Rangers and possibly Los Angeles on the periphery.

Tough to read the Kings on this one. The Sabres are looking for youth. High-level prospects and picks. The complicating part is Buffalo’s been very careful with Eichel’s medical records. They want to make sure trading partners are serious before allowing access. That’s a little different than St. Louis, which has indicated it will make Vladimir Tarasenko’s available.

Good. Get it done.

I'd think something like 7x$8 would be fair for both sides.

If we are going to $8M I want it to be 6 years.

6x$8M or 7x$7M those are the offers I put on the table if I’m Treliving.

I prefer 7x7, I think Johnny will age nicely.

The best part of getting Eichel would be those clowns on the fan eating crow

I would be willing to bet that Nault breaks down and cries about it on air if that goes down.

I actually don't think I agree...

On one hand, it's great that he has quality traits in terms of hockey IQ and skills that should help him age nicely, as players who rely on skating and shooting usually don't age so great.

On the other hand, his body takes a beating every game from whacking and he's well known for his horrible diet and other habits (unless that's all changed).

I think it's pretty 50/50 on whether or not he ages nicely, but either way I'd have no problem with 7×7

He'll age better with more money, I think it's going to take 8x7.5 or 7x8.5.

It'll be somewhere around $60m no matter what way you slice it.

Putting 2 and 2 together, it's likely then that if they bid for Eichel, it's with a package centered around Tkachuk.

Tkachuk, Zary, 1st + type of package.

Gaudreau - Eichel is a duo management probably believes could be in the top tier.

Monahan probably gets moved next year after he improves his stock post-surgery. Unless this group somehow makes noise..

With a Johnny 1 year from UFA, the deal is seldom fair to both sides.

What is Johnny’s motivation to accept less than 8 years?

Johnny holds all the cards. Trading for Eichel likely only makes sense with Johnny signed. Is Calgary really going to hold the line on the term?

Plus, the longer term likely means a bit less AAV.

Oh course the Flames would prefer a term of 5-6 years. But Johnny choosing to accept a term making him an UFA again at a age which does not favour him is not going to happen.

It kind of bugs me when Friedman says the Flames don't have enough interesting pieces to acquire Eichel, then he goes on to say Anaheim does.

Are pieces like 3rd OA, Zegras, Drysdale really more interesting that Tkachuk?
Personally, I don't think so. Matthew Tkachuk is only 23, yet has had 3 years of high production.

Anaheim, Minnesota and Vegas, with Boston, and the Rangers. Really, none of these terms have any players, that could conceivably be traded, who are better and younger than Tkachuk.

I almost wonder if Friedman thinks Tkachuk isn't on the table at all in terms of Eichel offers.
