The rumour mill was going wild speculating about a mystery A-lister who was HIV positive. Charlie was always the most likely candidate, and it appears it is him

Charlie Sheen confirmed on Tuesday that he is HIV-positive, as rumored in recent days by an onslaught of tabloid stories. Sheen told Matt Lauer on the “Today” show that he is going public with his illness for multiple reasons, including that he’s been blackmailed for upwards of $10 million since he was diagnosed four years ago.

Sheen said that he hired prostitutes over the years, some of whom turned around and extorted him over his diagnosis. Sheen told Lauer that one woman took a cellphone photo of the antiretroviral HIV medication he had in his bathroom and threatened to sell the image to the tabloids.

“What people forget is that’s money they’re taking from my children,” Sheen told Lauer. “They think it’s just me, but I’ve got five kids and a granddaughter. … I release myself from this prison today.”

Sheen said depression over his condition led him to drug and alcohol use, “making a lot of bad decisions” that resulted in hiring more prostitutes who could blackmail him.

“That part I own, one hundred percent,” Sheen said.

He told Lauer he led with “condoms and honesty” with all of his sexual partners, and it “couldn’t be farther from the truth” that he threatened the health of many others — he said it’s impossible that he transmitted the disease to anyone else. Sheen said that he had unprotected sex with two partners, but both were warned ahead of time and under a doctor’s care. Sheen confirmed that before sexual activity, he’s told all of his partners that he is HIV-positive.

The only surprise here is that Sheen is reported as a "Hollywood A-lister."

I believe that in Canada you can be charged with aggravated assault or attempted murder for knowingly spreading HIV.

i saw something on my facebook feed about an a-lister being positive - the article went on to say it was easy to figure out who it was.

i have to admit that i thought about it for 15 seconds and could not figure it out - i then went on with my life.

hopefully he had not spread it much.....as a complete aside, i wonder if this will get mentioned on hockey wives with ryan miller's wife bieng on his show

To clear up some likely misunderstandings that will inevitably come up:

If someone is HIV positive and their viral count is kept low (ie. taking their medications regularly as prescribed) the risk of transmission is very low. Still a risk the women should be made aware of certainly, but it's highly unlikely he spread the disease if compliant with his medication regime

Yes, there's a preconception that transmission is guaranteed, or at the very least somewhat likely.

The odds of transmission after a single act of unprotected vaginal intercourse with an HIV+ partner are incredibly low, on the order of 1000:1 or 2000:1.

Edit: Obviously CS is still criminally responsible, and a total dbag, but I just wanted to make the clarification.

If this is true he is a scum. Well worse than scum. Not sure there is really a definitive word that could be used that would accurately reflect how much scum he is.

Given his increasingly haggard appearance, and his continued dependency on illicit substances, I would highly doubt that he has been conscientiously keeping to an HIV treatment plan. Recent photos of Charlie Sheen look like someone in the late stages of an infection so his viral load would be very high.

True. But there's a difference between being a self-destructive force and possibly passing a deadly virus to others knowingly.

Having HIV may not destroy your career, but being a self serving narcissist with entitlement issues will destroy your career completely. Especially when you mix in incurable viral STIs and involve innocent people.

Charlie Sheen has had HIV for years ... but his position now is that he beat the disease because it's undetectable in his system ... TMZ has learned.

Our sources say Charlie has known for more than 2 years that he was HIV positive ... and one source says he's known way longer than that. We're told Charlie was taking meds for the HIV and has had a series of blood tests, and over time, the virus has been "undetectable" in his system.

We're told Charlie freely admits he's had scores of sexual partners over the years, many of whom had intimate relations with him after his diagnosis. The implication here is clear ... Charlie is saying he didn't deceive anyone, since the blood tests did not reveal the presence of HIV.
