The All Blacks beat the Springboks by a record 57-0 over the weekend! All of a sudden I don't feel so bad about the Wallabies losses.

It's at the point where it's not even interesting to watch. But hey the Springbok fan tantrums on Facebook were pretty good.

If anyone cares the Rugby League World Cup is currently underway. The NYT has a pretty good article describing the event:

The Other (and Less Popular) Rugby World Cup Gets Underway

Also of note, Canada and the US will be hosting the 2025 World Cup.

World Rugby Sevens Series Update

Sevens is back!!! This weekend the 2017/18 series got underway in Dubai.

1st Place: South Africa
2nd Place: New Zealand
3rd Place: England

The defending champion Blitzboks picked up where they left off last season with another dominating win.

How did Canada do?

-Loss vs Kenya 29-15
-Win vs Uganda 22-17
-Loss vs South Africa 28-0
-Win vs USA 10-5
-Loss vs France 28-21

Overall: 11th Place

It was an inconsistent tournament for the Canadians. They picked up solid wins over Uganda and the US however lost a couple winnable games to Kenya and France.

Up Next: The South Africa Sevens in Cape Town, December 9-10th.

The same weekend the Welsh did in the Boks.

World Rugby Sevens Series Update

Round 2: It's the South Africa Sevens in beautiful Cape Town.

1st Place: New Zealand
2nd Place: Argentina
3rd Place: South Africa

The All Blacks won their first series in over a year. They are the early 2018 favourites.

How did Canada do?

-Loss vs Samoa 19-17
-Win vs Fiji 22-14
-Win vs Wales 31-14
-Win vs France 35-7
-Loss vs Argentina 14-12
-Loss vs South Africa 19-17

Overall: 4th Place

It was a great tournament for the Canadians who showed they could compete with the world's best. The highlights were a pool win against Fiji and a dominating quarter final win against France. Even their losses were close with 2 points being the margin in all of them.

Up Next: The series takes a break until the Sydney Sevens from January 26-28th. Note the Australia and New Zealand events have switched places this year.

I meant to post about this earlier, but Canada is hosting Uruguay right now on TSN and the winner makes the World Cup in Japan next year. So far Canada looks solid and they’re exhausting the Uruguayans.

Shame about the result yesterday. I hate to admit that I don’t have much confidence in Canada on the return leg.

On a pretty unrelated note, just wanted to post to say that I met Adam Jones at the pub last night. He was there with a bunch of other Harlequins players for a charity quiz night. I was just there taking my 4 year old out for dinner after the rugby. Anyway, he is a really nice humble guy. Was chatting with my kid about the game earlier in the day and who his favourite player was. It is Danny Care, and Adam Jones made the comment that it is probably because they are the same size! He was asking me where I am from and when I mentioned Calgary he was very familiar, aprentley has a cousin in Red Deer. Anyway, he is a top bloke and reinforced the notion that rugby players are the best people who happen to be professional athletes.

Very disappointing result for Canada. I can't see them winning by 10 points in Montevideo so it looks like they will need to go through the repechage.

The Mens and Womens sevens teams were also in action this weekend. How did they do?

World Rugby Sevens Series Update

Round 3: From the gorgeous harbour city during the Australia Day long weekend, it's the Sydney Sevens!

1st Place: Australia
2nd Place: South Africa
3rd Place: Argentina

Australia wins their first tournament in over 5 years. The Aussie women also won with a dominating performance going the entire tournament without giving up a point.

How did Canada do?

-Loss vs Scotland 52-5
-Loss vs Australia 27-5
-Loss to USA 40-19
-Loss to Samoa 14-7
-Win vs PNG 31-14
-Win vs Scotland 14-12

Overall: 13th Place

It was a disaster for the Canadians who were devastated by injuries and lost all their pool games by a combined score of 119-27. They improved on the 3rd day coming close in a game against Samoa they deserved to win and then sort of redeemed them selves with two wins to close it out.

The Canadian women were the only bright spot this weekend, picking up the bronze.

Up Next: Hamilton New Zealand hosts next weekend.

If memory serves his relation is an old boy with Red Deer Titans. There was talk of him coming over one summer to play for a few months, but it never came together.

On a separate note, Canada's free fall continues, 22 in the standings and plenty of room still to drop.

Loss to Uruguay is a blessing IMO. Shows Rugby Canada cant continue the way they’re going the way they are. Can’t fit the 15s team for the sake of 7s and Olympic funding and expect to stay with countries that are improving.

Choked for the guys, but kind of happy for what it may mean for the administration.

7's has killed 15's in Canada in my opinion.

The 7's team hasn't done much better this year unfortunately. How did they fare this weekend? Read on...

World Rugby Sevens Series Update

Round 4: For the first time in Hamilton, it's the New Zealand Sevens!

1st Place: Fiji
2nd Place: South Africa
3rd Place: Australia

It is the Fijian's first win of the season and the 4th different winner so far.

How did Canada do?

-Loss vs USA 28-14
-Loss vs Kenya 19-14
-Loss vs Samoa 22-14
-Win vs Wales 19-14
-Loss vs Argentina 14-12

Overall: 11th Place

Another tough tournament for the Canadians who failed to get out of a fairly easy group and only managed one win.

Up Next: A few weeks off before the tournament moves to North America for the Las Vegas Sevens starting March 2nd.

BUMP

A local Calgary boy from the might Calgary Hornets RFC

https://rugby.ca/en/news/2018/03/ble...iness-beetroot

Quote:
Most people know him as the formidable 29-year-old, six-foot-two, 225-pound Canadian inside-centre; What people don’t know about the powerful runner and strong tackler is that the Alberta native has been living completely off plant-based nutrition for the past four years.

What started out as a lifestyle choice proved so successful for Blevins personally that it sparked the idea to establish a fresh food company consisting solely of plant-based and dairy-free products.

Along with his fiance Michele Helmeczi, their company Beetroot began in 2016, originally set up to open as a completely plant-based cafe in Calgary, AB. When their lease fell through they took a pivot in early 2017 to focus solely on their most successful products: vegan, nut-based yogurt and cheese. These products have taken off in the last few months, and they are now in the process of expanding their line and scaling to store shelves within Calgary. They currently are offering online ordering, with shipping available in Canada.

-Win vs Wales 21-19
