Committee assignment rations are generally and traditionally set according to seat distribution. This would be a committee seat for the Democrats to fill.

Well it’s fair to also think the republicans might try to take advantage of a situation like this. Fortunately the senate still does seem to be a bit more willing to not reach for the deepest depths, but nothing will surprise me.

All true. It's also true, though, that for 5 years or more the Republicans have tossed traditions and handshake agreements out the window (see Garland SCOTUS appointment v. Coney Barrett appointment).
