Barcelona are blaming it solely on La Liga and their salary cap, which prevents them from signing Messi without getting rid of deadwood (which nobody wants). Wouldn't be shocked if this was just a play to force La Liga to backtrack a bit and soften their regulations ... and who knows? Tebas threw a tantrum when Neymar left the league, I'm sure he doesn't want Messi to leave. Could see him cave in.

That'd be a ballsy play after La Liga just got a bailout package for the clubs. But yeah that makes some sense, without Messi maybe even that bailout gets clawed back a little.

I mean....it could make sense.

They're blaming not signing Messi squarely on the Financial Regulations, they're saying that terms and salary and everything were agreed but they just cant fit him in with the regulations.

I have to agree with both you and the Senator, I could see it being a play, but it'd be a ballsy play.

Especially since the rest of the clubs in La Liga would probably scream bloody murder if Barca got an exemption.

Its kind of a double-edged sword though....Messi brings a lot of revenue not only to Barca but to all of La Liga through TV rights and Sponsorship deals, but at the same time, a Messi-less Barca would give all the other La Liga teams a better chance to compete.

And to potentially lose Messi for free? That'd be a swift kick in the balls.

What a mess.

La Liga is going end up doing like MLS and having designated players who you can go over the cap to sign.

lol the little dictator actually left.

edit: actually yeah, this totally comes across as pressuring La Liga. I'll believe it when I see it, the league is already trying to sell out to let them keep him.

Well I thought his contract was a done deal so I assume nothing until he kicks a ball in a jersey.

Yeah the more I think about it I think devo is right, this is a leverage play by Barcelona to get La Liga to fold. Make it as real as possible, see if the reaction is negative enough, and hope to get concessions. Either way it's still pretty unreal to see how arguably the biggest sports team on earth has completely destroyed itself financially.

They're already trying to sign one of the worst deals in sports history to give a lump sum to Barcelona. Madrid gets way more flack, but Barcelona is probably the most self-entitled, sanctimonious club around. Other clubs are selling players to fit in to the economic limits while Barcelona keeps bringing in more and stomps their feet in a corner. La Liga has already tried to give them help, at the great expense of clubs in the league for the next fifty years. But it's not enough because that club is so poorly run. So they come out with this petulant ####.

"Petulant and Whiny" should be the Official Slogan for La Liga.

They should make a patch and have every team wear it on their jerseys.

Still think it's 95% likely he's playing for Barcelona on September 1, but we'll see I guess.

looks like he's going to PSG. Bouhafsi (top source) says it'd be a 2 year deal (plus option for another year). Talks ongoing, deal could be completed this weekend.

Pretty much what I figured. If it wasnt going to be Barca it was likely going to be PSG.

I'd wager the EPL is too hard for Messi.
