Default Inspired by Iceland

So today Icelanders were supposed to reach out to friends, business associates and anyone outside Iceland to help re-introduce the country again to the tourism we can so sorely use after the economic collapse.

Its a neat idea and having only been here for 3 weeks I'm reminded every day what an awesome place this is, especially for those who've never been.

Anyhow so doing my part, theres a cool video on the home page you can check out, its a bit cheesy too but hey it shows off the landscape and if you navigate also to the live webcams you can checkout some high quality live webcams as well including the famous blue lagoon hot springs.

http://www.inspiredbyiceland.com/

The tourism/music video:

And IMO the best way to show off Iceland, Sigur Ros' Heima:

The live webcams, better earlier in the day, we are +6hrs of Calgary.

Anyhow, did my civic duty; give Iceland a thought as a destination for your travels, besides the amazing landscape and natural beauty; you have the hot women (and I hear men for you women.)

Meh, the crazy Yoko Ono and Lennon's peace tower in Reykjavik, least the tower looks cool too bad she's bat sh*t crazy.

Story about this campaign:

Quote:
Tourism chiefs in Iceland have turned to an unlikely source to help them turn around the country’s volcano-hit tourist industry – the social networking site Facebook.
A government campaign has called on the entire nation to gather together online to show the world that their country is 'open for business'.

I was planning to visit Iceland within the year; and hear it's very much like New Zealand and kiwis - An island nation with laid back people, hip small country culture, and amazing scenery.

The first time I watched Heima I felt so homesick for Iceland, and I've never even been there! Truly a great bit of tourist propaganda masquerading as a music documentary.

Iceland is pretty high on my list of places I want to go. I'm a volcano tourist.

Not a dumb question and yes you would be hard pressed to find an Icelander over the age of 16 today who's not fluent in English. Especially hot women in Icelandic bars.

So sad, right now the fashion for women is short short skirts. Awful timing on my part to arrive now just in spring.

Anyhow more joy:

This is a hit Vimeo time lapse video done by Sean Steigemeir ()..

Song is Jonsi (from Sigur Ros).

Plus a bit on the Blue Lagoon which a lot of people use Icelandair's free stop overs!

Iceland's tourism board should really be paying me.

Collection of hot girls from Facebook Iceland, yes I even saw a black girl, wtf.

Also, New Years even Iceland is a must for men who like to blow sh*t up, as one commenter said:

Quote:
Sydney, a city of roughly 4million people, bought 50 tons of fireworks. Iceland, country of 300.000, bought 700 tons of fireworks.
Everyone in Iceland shoots up fireworks, and its as far as the eye can see lasting from spurts at about 6pm up until a noise filled sky at 11pm and a crazy frenzy from about 11:45 - 12:15am.

Thor,

What can you tell us about the recent victory by "Besti Flokkurinn" in the Reykjavik municipal elections? That seems like a bizarre and fun chapter in the social dissatisfaction on the street there--I mean, I know they're supposed to be legitimate now, but it's sort of like the Rhinoceros party winning the provincial legislature, isn't it?

Also, have a Baejarins Bestu for me.

Haha, that was priceless. So basically Reykjavik had its 4th mayoral election in 3yrs, and people were fed up; so one of the most well known comedians in Iceland Jon Gnarr decided to run as a comedy idea, calling themselves the 'Best Party'. Oddly enough with all the frustration for politicians these days his party won so he can become Mayor in Reykjavik, the whole city runs like a parliamentary election here, he didn't win a majority but got most seats for the Reykjavik chamber (like our aldermen) and formed the government with another party.

Then there is the hilarious video for their party, "simply the best"

An hour long video on Iceland, attractions, beautiful scenery, make sure you check out the VIMEO HD in fullscreen. Iowa, dude about 16 mins in you can see more about the Best party win.

Here's Viggo Mortensen on Iceland:
