Best of luck Versteeg!

He really was the straw that stirred the drink on our powerplay though.

To be fair, millions of dollars will go much further for you in Russia than in Switzerland.

Weird, I thought Versteeg would definitely catch a ride with another NHL team. Times change I guess. Good luck steeger, I liked you on the flames.

Read Red Notice to see how much protection being a foreign billionaire affords you in Russia. Hint: it's nothing.
Not for $100 billion could you get me over there.

Yeah same, I'm surprised he didn't up with a NHL deal somewhere.

With his injury problems, I see him being dragged off the ice on a tarp Russian-style some time in the near future.

I'm not.
Versteeg may still have enough ability to play at an NHL level, but his health and durability is a huge concern at this point.
And keep in mind, this is no longer an NHL that is very forgiving to veterans who have lost a good deal of their prime skills due to injury and/or general wear and tear and who are or have become marginal or past their best before date.

It's hard to find details about it because most of the stories are in Russian and Google Translate doesn't do a great job with Russian to English. From what I can tell, in late-July, inspectors discovered serious structural issues with the building and deemed it unsafe for either the team or fans to be in the building.
I'm unclear if the problems were caused by renovations that were being carried out, or if the renovations were being done to try to fix the problems that were already there. Either way, it was determined that the arena won't be cleared in time for the season, so Avangard will play their home games in a small arena outside Moscow, over 2000 km away from Omsk.
What's weird is that their old arena is Omsk seems to still be operational and isn't much smaller than the arena they'll be playing out of in Moscow. You'd think it would have made more sense to play there.
|
The arena has cracks in the foundation. Some also report cracks in the walls, but it is not confirmed. Arena is built on the bank of Irtysh river on some unstable soil. Allegedly, the river waters have destabilized the concrete foundation somehow.
Another arena in Omsk is officially deemed not up to KHL standards, although it is unclear where exactly it falls short.

If they're still around, will he be competing with Nigel Dawes and Linden Vey to get in the Top 5 scoring in the K?

Yep, he probably wasn't good enough for the NHL anymore a few years ago when he signed in Europe and couldn't get insurance on his leg/hip.
Shows where the flames have been the last couple of years in terms of depth and skill, but hopefully those days are behind the organization for the next while.

So when he had 15 goals and 37 points for the Flames in 2016/17 he wasn't good enough for the NHL?
He looked pretty good to me in his stint here, injuries aside.

I think had Versteeg not been injured this year he probably gets a contract somewhere. Sadly injuries derailed him. I liked him in his first season here, pretty underrated

Besides the obvious Elliott chirp, my favourite Versteeg moment was during a scrum you could see a lot of players yapping and the mic picks up the Ref: “Versteeg! #### off!”

The skill is obviously still there but he didn't skate at an NHL level imo to stick.
There's a reason he was looking at offers in Europe before the flames plucked him from the Oilers.

He scored at over a 0.50 P/GP pace and led the team in powerplay goals. It was only as he was injuring his hip last year that I think his skating really deteriorated.

The Swiss league only allows 4 non Swiss players per team. Maybe no team wanted to waste one of their import slots on him?

He tried to play in the swiss league 2 years ago, but the team couldn't get insurance on the contract so he went to the Oilers on a PTO.
Probably still an issue considering he missed most of last season due to injury.
