Similar to the Engellund contract for the flames. I dont see this as a big issue. Looking at their defensive depth they will have many holes to fill. Have heard they like his demeanor in the room, Adds toughness.

Yes... if only he were any good at playing hockey.

I love Vancouver the city. If someone offered me an extension, I think I'd take it.

Engelland was a UFA signing, which means you always need to add $$$ to outbid someone.
Gudbranson was a re-signing so the dynamics are different.

It's kinda a weird deal but it makes sense. If he plays well the nucks can trade him and his relatively low cap hit andget a solid return. And if he sucks and plays poorly it doesn't matter since they are rebuilding for the length of the contract anyways and then he's just a body.
Also he is only 26?!?

26 yr 6’5” physical, Right Handed Dman who plays top 4 minutes signed to 3 yrs at $4mil?
I know we like to hack on ol’dim Jim and th Nucks, but this isn’t a bad signing at all.

Only 3 years, it's not like they are close to the cap or anything, that contract can't really hurt them.

Yeah, the 3 year term at $4M is hardly an awful deal.
He's not very good, but he is all those things you mentioned - and GMs do value them. This isn't a bad deal for the Canucks, I just don't think it will help them all that much going forward. It won't hurt them, and should be looked at as kind of their Wideman...only mean instead of somewhat capable of putting up points.

Agreed but the situation is the same. $$ not a big deal if owners are willing to pay it. Once the team is retooled and ready to go hes off the books. Deliverables in play very similar.
I am friends with may canucks fans (at least better then E=NG fans) and some like it some hate it. According to them the fan base is pretty divided on him

Yeah, was about to say, have you watched him play? $4M per is about $3M too high for what he actually brings to the table. Dude is a terrible hockey player. A more expensive Sbisa indeed.

Forget the plus minus, that's the least of their problems here. I mean... look, the Canucks' own fan website did an extensive review of Gudbranson's quality of play here.
https://canucksarmy.com/2018/02/10/d...ik-gudbranson/
The conclusion is pretty well summed up in the article:
Quote:
It really can’t be overstated how difficult it is to make a statistical case that paints Gudbranson in a positive light. There are few regular NHL defenders since Gudbranson entered the league that have posted worse underlying shot metrics. We’re talking bottom-20 in almost every category among defenders with over 4000 minutes since his inaugural season. [...]
Now obviously, if you try hard enough, you could try to defend these numbers. They weren’t great in Florida and have absolutely plummeted since coming to Vancouver, but maybe he just hasn’t been a fit. Perhaps he’s been saddled with partners that don’t work in a system that doesn’t allow him to play his game. But even if that’s the case, he’s 26, and it’s his job to prove he can be effective. He hasn’t. It’s generally not advisable to sign a player who has never shown he can be solvent at even strength, and at any rate if you find yourself consistently having to twist yourself into knots trying to defend a player you might just have to step back and consider that he isn’t that good.
|
Those are their own fans saying that. Signing him at all makes your team worse, never mind the 4M. And as bad as they are right now, they have some good prospects that will be joining them over the next few years, so bad players playing for them is bad for them and good for the Flames.

Would this be a comparable for the Oilers trying to re-sign nurse? PUshing them to 5 d-men making 4million +?

I watched him enough in Florida to know that he's not going to be much better than that for the rest of his career. Just doesn't have the skating ability.

Low hanging fruit... but if you actually look at his numbers...
First 2 years in the NHL were bad for plus minus. That Panthers team wasn’t that good defensively at the time and pretty shallow defensively. One could argue that due to his draft position and need of the team, he was brought into the NHL a bit too early but started his pro development for the most part in the NHL.
Over his last 5 seasons he has been pretty close to an even player. His style of play (physical) has also caused some injuries which could also impact level of play.
Last year was his worst year in 5 seasons at a minus 14. But that nucks team was really bad as whole.
This year, not that great but he’s certainly been better over the last few years.

That would be a good deal if he were a legitimate top 4 dman. He's not.
