I don't think you could give any of those players away for free. Maybe a mid to late round pick for Versteeg if it looks like he will be healthy soon.

That's my whole point.
The assets we should trade aren't worth anything.
Trading young players, as suggested, and players with term makes no sense right now.
If you do it do it in the offseason because they will likely be more valuable then, when more teams are in the mix.
There is 21 games left. Why would we decimate our team when they are a handful of points or less out of a playoff spot.

Yeah let's spend 5 years rebuilding and right when we have a good young core entering their primes let's sell everybody.

I don't think anyone is advocating selling members of the core. I'm just saying attempt to sell Ferland, Stone, Stajan, Versteeg, Hathaway and, if Tre can sell them, sell them for the best picks and prospects you can get.
If the Flames miss the playoffs in 2018, they will not have a pick before the 4th round. It would make a huge difference to their ability to restock the forward prospect pool if they could parle those 5 players into, say, a 2nd (Ferland), a 3rd (Stone), a 6th (Versteeg) and a 7th round pick (Stajan).

Honestly don't think we have to worry about getting picks. Treliving will find way to recoup a second and a third. A first is a different story and probably involves a blockbuster trade.

Is there anyone in the first round who's worth giving up a good player for? Keeping in mind no one in the top five will trade a pick.

Not sure how this draft is compared to others. I know the top 5 is solid (Most drafts are the same) but don't know if its a legit deep draft.

I put sell, but I more mean re-configure, this teas as constructed is not a Cup contender, but I think that they are very close. A few tweaks could go a long way.
Upgrade at wing, even at the expense of a player like Brodie.
I'd take late round picks for Stajan, Brower, Lazar, Hrivik etc. (if possible, if not, just jettison them to the minors, move Brouwer tot he 3rd line again) and would just try going young and skilled on the 4th line.
Try out AHL skilled guys like Mangiapaine, Foo, Klimchuk, Shinkaruk and see what happens instead of a pseudo checking line

Moves I'd like to see:
To Ottawa:
Stone
Frolik
Klimchuk
To Calgary:
Hoffman
Thoughts: Flames get a PP specialist in Hoffman and also make room for him moving out Frolik ~ Its a premium price but I think the Flames can pay it with Andersson pushing like he is / I think Klimchuk could be taken or left in that deal honestly but a prospect might be required to push it over the top.
To Buffalo:
Bennett
Wotherspoon
To Calgary:
Kane ~ extension signed 4 years x 5.5 mill
Baptiste
Thoughts: Flames get a gritty winger who is more established and fits the current age group in terms of prime years ~ has had a solid season on a terrible Buffalo team so far. Bennett is a project and would fit in with the current youth movement in Buffalo ~ Flames get the better prospect but they are gambling a lot more with this move than Buffalo.
To Pittsburgh:
Stajan max retained
To Calgary:
5th round pick
Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland
Kane - Backlund - Tkachuk
Hoffman - Jankowski - Versteeg
Brouwer - Lazar - Hathaway
Giordano - Hamilton
Brodie - Hamonic
Kulak - Andersson
Smith
Rittich

I like the Ottawa trade though they will never do it and if Kane didn't have such a toxic personality I would love to have him. I cant believe that Kane will ever get his act together. Some people are just messed up and theres nothing anyone can do to help.

Stajan to Pittsburgh would have made a ton of sense before they acquired Riley Sheahan back in November.

Nobody wants Stone, Stajan, or Versteeg. Two of them will be gone in the off season anyways.
Selling Ferland would be a bad move if you ask me. Sure he's not a true top line RW but he's still on a pretty good contract next season.
The Flames, like it or not, are at the point where they've gathered lots of picks in the past. They need to turn their defense prospects into currency. They've drafted well. Time to start building.
No rentals, we're not at that stage yet, but a guy like Hoffman or Kane with an extension would be a good move. Get younger guys who can help now and down the road.

Flames should make a hockey trade, however the draft is probably the right time to do those. If prices are high, then sell:
1. Stone
2. Ferland
Give away if there are takers:
1. Stajan
2. Brouwer
3. Versteeg
4. Bartkowski
Move badges:
Brouwer to Tkatchuck: A
Find a way to get Hamonic an A

If you think that Backlund has a good contract and was below FMV, shouldn't it be easier to trade him now? Or at least, shouldn't his trade value go up?

He has a no trade under his new deal that he just signed... not sure if that doesn't kick into next season or immediately?
Either way Backlund is not being moved.
