+5 on Tuesday? I’m going with Floodtron 4 at this time, quite likely our back alley floods if it melts a lot. That water then goes into the garage and could creep up towards the house.

Luckily one day only. Then back to colder temps. I think it will make the roads awful and nothing else. Appealing for a FLOODTRON de-escalation.

So about that, snow is waist deep in my back yard in some areas. I tried moving some into the alley for 20 mins, and realized I needed gas or electric motor assistance. I made very little impact.

Looks like it will be the gas and fire route that was suggested.

Um, you are planning on melting it in place? Isn't that just pushing the problem from spring, to now?

Where I am coming at is, I have had serious problems with flooding in my basement storage room. These problems have been in the spring, during melt and rains, yeah - but also during chinooks after big snowfalls. Sounds to me like if you are melting the snow around your house, all you are doing is either turning it into ice, or creating a flooding problem in the now, rather than in the future.

Just keep that in mind, and good luck!

I'm 99.9% sure he's not actually going to pour gas on the snow in his backyard and light it on fire. He's joking.

I'm building a snow pile in the middle of my back yard.

From what I have shoveled off of my deck this winter so far it will be taller than me when I am done.

Then to dig out a snow cave like when I was a kid.

I'm here for the amateur hydrology:

Quote:
Provincial officials are already starting to monitor lake levels in hopes of avoiding spring flooding because of 'concerning' snowpack levels in the B.C. Interior.

As of February 1, the snowpack level in the Okanagan was at 131 per cent of normal, according to the B.C. River Forecast Centre.

The Similkameen is sitting at 135 per cent of normal. Other areas with higher than average snow accumulations are: the South Coast, Lower Fraser, Skagit, Vancouver Island, East and West Kootenay and Boundary regions.

"It's probably been some years since we've seen them this high, this early," said Shaun Reimer, section head for public safety and protection with the Ministry of Forests.

"It's certainly concerning from the perspective that the higher the snowpack, the higher the probability we could get widespread flooding."

'Didn't see it coming' last year
Last year — when much of the Okanagan experienced damaging floods — the February snowpack was only 79 per cent.

But Reimer said residents should not worry when they compare the numbers because he says this year officials are better prepared.

"The real difference between last year and this year ... we didn't see it coming," said Reimer.

"We're actively drawing down in [Okanagan Lake] to make room for the expected water coming in."

I'm disappointed. I was hoping that by the end of the long weekend there would be a video. Oh well.

The chance of getting another record rainfall and our neighbourhoods flooding.

Clearly.

I know that I have posted this in another thread but I feel that this is important to post here as well.

A BC company will be clear cutting over 400 hectares of trees near Highwood house on Highway 40. All of that rain water that will hit the ground in that area will have less of an ability to be absorbed into the ground and will end up just running downstream and right into Calgary.

Prairies
Consistent spring weather will be delayed this year as we expect a colder than normal March and early April across the Prairies. The minimal winter snowpack and cooler spring weather pattern reduces the risk of flooding from spring thaw.

Soil moisture is a concern for large parts of the region after a dry summer last year and below normal snowfall through the winter. There are indications that spring will feature a more active weather pattern across the southern Prairies, bringing some relief from the very dry conditions. However, confidence in this part of the forecast is low, but having the wetter pattern verify is especially important as we expect a warm and dry pattern as we head into summer.
