Bill Peters just spoke one-on-one with James Neal, Mark Jankowski and Sam Bennett. Keep an eye on that line tonight...they can be game-changers for #Flames. #CGYvsCOL
"Neal and Jankowski, play more like Bennett."

Splitting up Andersson-Fantenberg away from home also makes sense. As bad as Brodie’s dumb plays can be, he’s overall an effective and quick D who will hopefully make the Avs matchups less lopsided.
You could do a lot worse than Fantenberg/Brodie as your bottom pair. Especially on the road when you don't have last change -- would rather have Brodie's mobility paired with Fantenberg who is more of a stay at home guy. Also, Brodie plays better when his minutes are down (and, not surprisingly, with better zone starts).

I will donate $30 to CP if Neal scores a goal tonight.
I will also add an additional $10 if both Neal scores and flames win tonight.
Neal has been a HUGE disappointment. Make me pay the piper Real Deal!

You mean the 4th overall pick who just led the entire NCAA in scoring as a 20 year old.... as a defenseman...?
Guy is tracking to be a top pair superstar, this ain't a conversation about depth.
It clearly is when our own first overall pick, who also happens to be a defenceman, and who by all accounts is ready for prime time cannot even crack our lineup right now.
Sorry to say, but that by definition is a conversation about depth my friend and Calgary has a significant edge.

Peters is giving these guys one more chance. If the Flames lose and don't control the game, I could see big changes like Fantenberg, Jankowski, Brodie out and Valimaki, Dube, Stone in.

Peters spoke one on one with three guys. Thanks, Wills.
Another hot take from Derek "Admiral Plain Vanilla" Wills.
James: Skate like you aren't in quicksand. Shoot like your hands aren't made of concrete.
Jankowski: You are 6'4" 220. Maybe throw a shoulder into someone.
Bennett: You eliminated Girard, and have 3 points in two games. Well done. Re-target your lasers on Rantanen and Barrie.
Nice individual, one on one talk. I think we really figured things out as a group here.

Valimaki was selected 17th overall in the same draft Makar was selected 4th. Where did you get first overall from?

I agree.
Jankowski played his best hockey with Jagr. I think he'd be at his best on a line with Tkachuk and Backlund doing the primary cycling for him. He's a good player but the center position holds him back IMO.

I'd be oh so much more comfortable if the top line has a 'pre-ASG' showing tonight.
Having said that, even if the top line is MIA again, I think with a bit more effort from the other guys we come away with a win tonight. If top line also chips in.....could be a dominant Flames win.

Obviously the conversation is not about where in the first round they were selected....both players were their teams first round picks that year and Valimaki is primed to be more impactful than Makar at this point - he's actually been playing as a pro all year vs NCAA competition. It's not even close. You can argue a forward can pull it off, but I'd bet you'd be hard pressed to find much of a track record of an NCAA player stepping into the playoffs and contributing at more than a replacement level.
Girard is hurt and the Avs are out of options beyond Makar unless they want to put a Prout level player into the lineup in Barbiero. No depth. At least the Flames can go to Stone, Valimaki, Kylington before they have to dip into relative AHL level or Collegiate level players after their first injury. Depth.

I think we can all agree the Flames have another gear in them.
I think the Avs have played as good as they possibly can given their lineup and were 2 minutes from being down 2-0. I don't see another gear possible from the Avs and I don't think they will be any better than they have been thru 2 games.
Flames have that extra gear(maybe even two) and I think we see one of those tonight.
Another hot take from Derek "Admiral Plain Vanilla" Wills...
Why complain about this? It seems weird to criticize a guy for providing mundane information about a Flames practice to a fanbase that is rabid for any information.

I knew the Flames would lose one, figured it'd be game 3, but oh well, now win the next 3. Flames win 5-2 including an empty netter, but the outcome never really seems in doubt.
I might be wrong about this since I’ve been wrong about pretty much everything so far these playoffs but Makar will step in and he will be the 3rd or 4th best skater out there tonight on either team.
He is insanely good at hockey and his game will be perfect for the playoffs. Game 2 was a must win for me because I think the addition of another superstar in Makar to the Avs is going to make it pretty hard for the Flames to win 3 out of 5.
Regardless, go Flames. I want a long run!

It took Gaudreau 6 pre-season and 10 regular to get acclimeitized so I don’t see Makar making a difference yet.
