Adam Fox doing well in college doesn't mean he's not a long shot prospect. Being undersized and a d-man makes him instantly a long shot prospect.

My point still remains Fox,Gillies and Ferland gets the phone hung up on the Flames, wouldn't you agree?
Nope, don't agree at all. It may not get the deal done because it depends on what Sakic feels he can get on the market. However, those are 3 legitimate players, 2 of which are highly touted prospects with a good pedigree. That should be good enough starting point in discussions to get a player like Duchene, so your position of "hanging up the phone" (which is supposed to indicate disgust from the other GM) is patently ridiculous.

Oh, and Fox is 6 foot. He's not necessarily "undersized", but even if that were the case, he's not small enough to make you wonder if he can play in the NHL like people did with Gaudreau. Besides which, you aren't asking him to be a big physical defender. He's a puck-mover and play-maker, which are a hot commodity for defense prospects in the modern NHL.

You know who else is 6 foot and under 200 pounds? Mark Giordano.

Does replacing Fox with Valimaki, Andersen, or Kylington make the deal better?

Maybe Valimaki, but I would bet that league wide, Fox would be more highly touted than Andersson or Kylington.

I sure don't see the appeal of a 5'11 185lb center that was -35 last year. He gave up on the team and came to camp today wearing a pout. Sure he got screwed by the team. Just walk away.

We just need to revisit this when and if Duchene actually gets traded because I don't think you're even in the ballpark, and you just keep beating the drum which has resulted in people downplaying the prospects you mentioned.

They're good prospects, but I think Duchene is ultimately moved for an important young player with pedigree already on a NHL roster plus a high pick and or prospects equal to or greater than those you mentioned.

There's no need for this to go on and on. We'll likely find out soon enough.

Trading Ferland would be incredibly stupid in my opinion

The more I think about it, the more I think that the Flames should consider moving Backlund in a package to acquire Duchene, but it creates its own set of problems.

Backlund: Age 28, #24 overall pick, 6' 1" 199 pounds, 50 point #2C.
Duchene: Age 26, #3 overall pick, 5' 11" 200 pounds, 60 point #2C/#1W

You would have to sort through a lot of team-related issues/strategy. Backlund seems to be a core part of this team - what about the chemistry that he has built within the team? He's amazing in his own zone - will Duchene be able to take that kind of workload? Who will?

This is where I wish Bennett had shown more in terms of development and ability to take over the #2C role.

I would have envisioned a roster like this:

Gaudreau-Monahan-Duchene
Tkachuk-Bennett-Ferland
Versteeg-Jankowski-Frolik
Lazar-Stajan-Brouwer

Also, I'm not entirely sure that the Avs would do a trade centered around Backlund as their ask has been high-level blue-chip prospects.

I don't see how trading Backlund for Duchene makes us better. He would be buried trying to play Backlund's minutes, and Backlund's point totals would only increase playing Duchene's.

Because of the versatility that it provides the Flames. If Bennett had already developed into a legit #2C, Flames could easily play Duchene up on the #1RW slot with Gaudreau/Monahan. That's where the max benefit of a Backlund/Duchene swap would be.

Alas, that isn't the reality of today, so it is a much more complicated trade.

Lets just roll with the team we have. I Think we have a great lineup and i dont think trading our Selke candidate will get us closer to a Stanley cup this season. Monday cant come soon enough.

I say hell no to trading Backlund for Duchene. At absolute best, it's a lateral move. At worst, a downgrade. Backlund has been proven to make the wingers that play with him, better. There's a reason the 3M line was so dominant as he was probably the largest factor. I'll take Backs anyday.

Also is does not make sense financially as the only reason on earth to move Backlund is if the numbers don't work to keep other core/young pieces in the near future. Duchene is is going to command more in salary than Backlund.

The problem the avs have is that if they don't sort out the organization from within first, whoever they acquire is probably going to want to leave once their contact runs out. It'd make more sense to get youngsters with contact control.

Matt Duchene is a Jordan Eberle type player. Don't pay more that the Islanders did for Eberle. Period.

You'd probably get as good a result if you converted Bennett to wing like a lot of people think he could do successfully, and didn't move Backlund:

Gaudreau-Monahan-Ferland/Bennett
Tkachuk-Backlund-Frolik/Bennett
Versteeg-Jankowski-Ferland/Bennett
Lazar-Stajan-Brouwer

P.S. - I get why the Flames are still keen on him as a centre. But options should be kept open.

Definitely don't see any way a Backlund-Duchene swap makes sense for either team.

The Habs make the most sense. They have enough cap space to take on Duchene and send back zero salary. They are also the most desperate team needing a centre.

Flames could use goal scoring and Treliving has said as much so Duchene makes some sense as he is likely the best goal scorer on the trade market right now. If he was brought in and Backlund and Bennett were not part of the trade one of Bennett or Duchene would be converted to wing.

Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford has been in the market for a third-line centre throughout the off-season.
Rutherford said Friday the team has their eyes on three players who could be available to acquire before the team opens their season on October 4.
"We have our focus on three guys," Rutherford said of Penguins' search for a depth centre. "I think one or two may become available before the season starts."
