Default Friedman's 31 thoughts Post trade deadline edition

https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/...fs-kyle-dubas/

Flames related:

Quote:
11. The move that surprised most was Florida’s trade of Vincent Trocheck. I heard when teams queried the Panthers about it, they asked what was wrong that made him available? Arizona, Calgary and Minnesota were among those who made pitches.

There were a few factors that went into this, but it’s clear that new coach Joel Quenneville and Trocheck didn’t mesh. Chris Johnston reported the Panthers have been ordered to cut payroll, which certainly fits with the move — but Quenneville wanted to send a message while the playoffs were still within reach that changes were coming if the group didn’t compete harder. The prospects (Eetu Luostarinen and Chase Priskie) will play. Lucas Wallmark played 12:39 in Tuesday’s 2-1 win over the Coyotes, Erik Haula 14:30. Haula is an interesting guy. He’s got a chip on his shoulder, believing he deserves more of a role than he gets. (In Minnesota, he was nicknamed “Haula-Famer” because of that.) The Panthers want attitude. He’ll get a shot there.

17. Calgary also checked into Wayne Simmonds. Second time in two years.

Other tidbits:

Friedman wonders if Canes, Toronto, Arizona will make trades after the deadline to address goaltending, d-men, and scoring respectively.
Whoever they acquire won't be eligible for the playoffs.

Friedman predicts that if Thornton doesn't return to the Sharks, Toronto could be his next destination

Leafs would have taken Stecher for Barrie but Canucks didn't have the picks and didn't make certain prospects available to complete the deal

Oilers considered Marleau before he ended up in Pittsburgh

Yzerman wanted a first for Athanasiou

Chicago didn't want to go past 2 years on a Lehner extension

Sens and Pageau were $200k-$500k apart on contract

The Parise for Ladd deal fell apart because of money and cap

Jost may be back in play in June.
Kadri and MacK push him out of the top 6 and the Avs believe he is a better C than W.

Concern on why Murray traded Kase. For years he wouldn't entertain it.

Glendening had a lot of interest

Lots of teams liked Laughton but Fletcher wasn't entertaining it

Honestly I wouldn't have minded Simmonds for a 5th but I would have preferred Ennis. Both guys have a lot of comparables on the Flames tho.

I would have loved Trochek here but that was a high price. What would have been out equivalent of Haula and Wallmark? Bennett + Janko?

Thornton's last comments suggests he's cup hunting. He was disappointed he wasn't dealt. I'm not sure TO is the destination if that's the case.

Friedman also suggested Thornton would get top 6 minutes in TO. I had a laugh at that. I mean, he might. But either outcome is laughable to me.

It would be a good move. The Leafs will be sellers next deadline and he can get traded to a more obvious contender.

I know Thornton has earned the right to play wherever he wants, but to hear him express disappointment that he couldn't chase the cup does not cause me to feel sympathy for his situation.

If he really wanted to chase a cup, he should have waived for another team when his top choices didn't express any interest.

He actually said it in a dressing room interview in front of his teammates. I'm sure they understand but he was essentially saying he wished he'd been traded from them. TBF he also said it would have helped the team to get an asset and that he still loved being a Shark.

I don't see it Elliote. I would be absolutely shocked if Joe would ever play for the Leafs. Unless that is his only option I can't see it knowing what I know. I think he would return to SJ before ever consider the Leafs.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Thornton sits out for a bit next season and joins a team for a run later on like Justin Williams this season

I would absolutely love Jumbo here, but I doubt it would ever happen. He's such a great presence.

Haula-famer. LOL. Sounds like the second coming of James Neal.

Is it still 31 thoughts or 10 bullets about the Leafs and then a few NHL tidbits.

I do. Closer friend with his brother Alex but yes, I grew up with him and his brothers. Was good friends with Steve Barber as well, lost his fight with ALS last year. Had a nice Memorial for him in Port Stanley. Such a nice funny guy for what he was battling. But yes, I talk to Joe once every couple of months on average during the season and see him quite a bit in the summer.

Would he consider the flames? While he is a shadow of his former self , him centering the 4th line would be great .

Something about him just rubs me the wrong way. I don't see him being good for our locker room. Seems very entitled.

Maybe it has to do with being very picky about going to a "contender" and not another playoff team. Sounds like he wants a cup gifted to him with putting in very little work. And then have the gull to complain about it in front of all his team mates that he didn't get his chance to be traded.

I'd want someone who would have came in thrilled and on fire to push a team on through the playoffs.
