[Trade] Flames trade for Erik Gustafsson from Chicago for a 2020 conditional 3rd

The quicker Johnny makes decisions and moves the puck on the PP , the more likely the Flames catch the PK out of position.

His fantastic vision and passing skills need to create quick 2 v 1 in zone chances or cross ice one time shots , not stagnate the PP or turnover the puck.

Having a cannon on the point will also enhance the PP a lot if Johnny moves the puck.

What needs to change is the player receiving the passes and not the system and that's why they probably went after Gustafsson left shot as opposed to Barrie who's a right shot. Now it's on Gaudreau to make it work, not changing the powerplay system.

There is something to be said for having the option of negotiating with five UFA defensemen in the off season. It creates a lot of opportunities to reshape the team's defense.

It also gives the opportunity to see how the new guys fit in on the ice and in the room instead of giving them offers in UFA blind to that information. The reverse for the player is also true.

Brodie and Gus are pretty much the opposite of each other.

One is a smooth skating defensive puck possession D man who thrives 5v5. The other is a pretty one dimensional PP quarterback/Offensive D man, with questionable defensive acumen and skating.

They don’t really compare at all. Well they’re left shots. And human.

Up til this year I don't think we ever thought of Brodie as a defensive specialist, but it's true. He just doesn't strike fear with hits, but as long as he plays smart position and uses his feet, he's quite good defensively. he can get physically overmatched down low, but he can make a great first pass out. Arguably his big mistakes have come when he overdoes it offensively and gives the puck up at the offensive blue line.

Gotta say, I wasn't unhappy with Gus' skating last night. The PP difference is going to be big.

I agree with his skating, I thought it was quite strong. His very first touch of the puck was a great hustle and clean and strong clearing out of the D zone.....something Brodie and Hamonic often bobble.

I thought he was pretty good last night, especially on a new team - and made a nice play on the pp goal.

What would be awesome is if he scores the game winning goal to eliminate the Oilers (either from the playoffs or in a playoff series). I would love the headlines and salty tears of an unsigned Oilers draft pick coming back to haunt them.

Part of that great first pass ability is just the calm and patience to make a move and fake out the first forechecker. Whether it's the reserve spin, just holding up or threatening to make either of those moves gives him so much space compared to other guys who try to force that first pass into the neutral zone that the opposing team has already narrowed down and is prepared for.

Once in a while he gets caught but most of the time it's a net positive for the guys on the ice to have Brodie being the guy to recover the puck in the defensive zone.

Gus is kind of our new defense version of Huselius.

Special teams are huge and the Flames have not been good at it. If Gus and Bort can help in those two areas, it will help this team a lot.

I noticed that the Oilers are 1st in PP and 2nd in PK. Their special teams have won them a lot of games.

I hope Kylington is watching Gus a lot while he sits in the press box. A powerplay specialist should be Kylington's floor. Hoping he can be more, but he needs to at least develop into what Gus is now. He's got all the tools.
