I busted out laughing at first, but... this likely means that Klefbom is out as they suspected. Barrie is all offense on a team that doesn't play defense. Being one of the few gifted players(in any category) on the team, he will be on PP1. There is no PP2 on Edmonton so he will get a lot of PP time. After 1 year of agony he probably figures he can cash in on being a PPG+ d-man, even if he does break an NHL record for the minus stat before the halfway point of the season.

It was probably $6 million over 2 years.

Edmonton is just desperately trying to validate itself by signing anyone whether it addresses a need or not.
He might have turned down the Oilers standard 6x6.

Are ANY of those improvements? Serious question.
I certainly think they improved their team. I don't think they signed any home run players that will take them over the top but I do think they upgraded at a few positions at solid value. Even if some of these players bust the Oilers can move on easily.

So basically Barrie is betting on himself. This signing goes two ways. Barrie cleans up on the PP and gets his 60 points. Leading him to a massive contract the coming offseason, that the Oier can’t afford, and he leaves in FA. Or he continues to regress, plays like dog####, and falls into obscurity. I mean, from a Flames perspective both outcomes are pretty good.

There is a secret 3rd option that Oilers management are likely to dumb to do. When the Oilers inevitably fall out of the race, giving up 4 goals a game, they flip Barrie at the deadline for positive assets...

I don't think any of those spots have improved, but we'll see.

However, I do agree that they have options and flexibility. Barrie on a 1-year is perfect for them. He replaces Klefbom this year and if things don't work out for him or the team, he is a great trade chip at the deadline. If he does work out, they can use Russell's money next year to re-sign him.

I think the Barrie thing is huge, especially if they don't replace Klefbom, but if he remains as one way and bad in his own end, the Oilers lose. The other one is JP, but playing in a league several levels below the NHL on big ice doesn't have me believing he's figured it out.

The other issue, did the Oilers close the gap on teams above them? Nope.

Did other teams improve themselves more then the Oilers? yeah

Can the Oilers continue having statistical outliars on their special teams? probably not.

I think the Oilers who were sliding badly in the end of the regular season and got their stuff wrecked in the play in are going to continue to slide.

Bad defense and bad goaltending and no defensively aware forwards = bad times ahead.

Barrie is overrated. Glad we got Tanev instead and im not a huge fan of that signing. Barrie basically a rover, not unlike gustafsson. Nice to have for the pp but too much of a liability 5v5. More to hockey than points but luckily the Oilers are too stupid to realize this. The pp was not their problem last year, their problem was that they were a terrible 5v5 team. Turris and Barrie are moves you make in nhl20 honestly. Holland is terrible, somehow doesn't understand you need a balanced roster to win. I think he was propped up by Yzerman and Nill for years. As soon as they left it was apparent Holland was just an empty suit. It's funny, the Oilers could really use a dman like tanev but are too stupid to see it.

LOL. You are probably right. The Oilers probably offered him $6 per year over two years and he said, let's just do one year, i'll take a discount.

That's where the other higher offers came from. The Oilers tried to get Barrie long term and he said no, so they aren't wrong, there were other higher offers.

Probably around 1.3 per game. So an 82 game schedule is about 106 times.

Paul is going to be pissed!

Take less money for the chance to play with the two best players in the world and win the second straight cup in Edmonton.

Its like the Oilers seek out the worst defensive players in the league and sign them/trade for them

I'm actually amazed they didn't qualify Athanasiou. He's just so Oiler-y

Yeah, how can anyone forget that? There's multiple banners and a documentary about it. For just the one year.
