I can't be the only one who thinks he clears.
His contract is terrible value for what he brings. $5MM for 4 more years for a 0.5 point per game player?

I think Ottawa gets him first.
Johnson is owed just $3.75, $5.5, $3.75, and $4.75 over the next four seasons. $17.75 million on a total $20 million cap hit, a bargain for a cash-strapped team.
They could use a guy to play behind Stutzle, too.

Honestly, he makes more than he is worth. I wouldn't take that contract for nothing.

To me he is a Red Wing come tomorrow. Stevie Y knows him well, and they have the room.

He's comparable offensively to Backlund, so I'd say it is pretty close to being what he is worth

No, not worth it. His point totals are likely to go down or stagnate at best.

Capfriendly does a neat comparable, and the top three matches for contracts are Alex Killorn, Ondrej Palat and Elias Lindholm.

I find that he and Derek Ryan are incredibly similar players. Solid if not spectacular contributors, smaller stature, right hand shot, makes players around them better, both from Spokane Washington... TJ is 4 years younger. He will be a solid role player for someone.

Does anyone ever stop to think that Tampa are in this bind because of the stupid contracts Stevie Y handed out?
Same as Detroit and their former players with stupid contracts from Ken Holland, and Edmonton expects him to fix things there?

His 5v5 production isn't that bad over the last two years, and he's still a really good 5v5 goal scorer. Here is his league ranking minimum 1000 minutes over the last two seasons.
1.15 Goals Per 60 (17th in the whole NHL)
1.87 Points Per 60 (117th)
Tampa is just so deep that he's on PP2 and they don't get as much time.
If you are a team with cap space that could use a scoring threat then it could be a shrewd pick up. Especially if you have room on PP1.

What contract was stupid? If not for a flat cap in the middle of a pandemic I don't think there is a contract on that roster they wouldn't be able to move.
The only contract that's a bit of an overpay would be Vasilevski but he's a yearly Vezina candidate with a Vezina trophy and a cup already...so even though it's a big cap hit he was probably the right goalie to give it to. Or Johnson who is still a top 20 5v5 goal scorer in the NHL and is going to get claimed for sure.

Does that mean he’s automatically gone to the team that claims him (subject to waiver position) or the Bolts can still use this as leverage to make a deal?

With all due respect to Stevie Y, they just WON THE CUP.
I don’t think anyone can say anything is stupid about any contracts or anything they did.
The accomplished the goal.
