Are you claiming Hamilton is good defensively?

How quickly people forget how much Brodie turned over the puck at the most opportune times. Last year he seemed to figure everything out but it was out of the norm. I’m not saying Barrie is amazing but they’re the same player more or less defensively. Offensively Barrie is hands down better based on his skating alone. But he will come at a premium.

That is why I compared Barrie to Hamilton, not quite as good as Brodie defensively, but significantly better offensively.

Oh I agree fully. If you look at both players history, there’s a higher chance they regress to the norm. Barrie wasn’t good last year while Brodie was solid. Chances are last year was an anomaly for both of them.

I could see Barrie really flourishing with Giordano as a partner.
Gio makes people better, even with his age.

Sign Barrie, play him with Gio, Barrie gets 50+ points, trade Barrie for assets. Rinse and repeat with someone else the next year.
I wish.

If Hamonic walks, Giordano keeps getting older, Brodie gets a big contract from Toronto, and Gustafsson gets a better offer, the Flames defence is going to be... like really bad.

Gonna need to bring in some more talent somehow, and Barrie might be the best we can do.

Brodie has really only had a couple of bad years - playing on his weak side under Gully. Other than that Brodie has been phenomenal. There was a couple of years where people were debating whether he was better than Gio. I think Barrie is like a Mike Green - offense and nothing else. I think we’ll miss Brodie a lot if he’s not signed.

That'd be my question.

I think they are both going to be looking for around 5.5-6 mil with term.

Can we just replace that with two of the many free agents looking for the same money and maybe less term? Kind of grab 2 # 4/5 guys like Vatanen/Shultz/Ceci/Bogosian/Shattenkirk/Van Reimsdyk on a few 2/3 year deals?

I think Wideman had one year where he earned his contract (and then some) but had 4 years where he was overpaid. Never a toxic contract but overpaid for 4 of the 5 years (2014-15 he was legit)

Remember when Hannan threw Ryan Smyth into the corner like Smyth was Mjolnir.

I would argue that the two previous seasons, last season especially, were outside the norm for him, and this season he returned to his usual self.

I'm also guessing that the difficult seasons were about private stuff. Wife's sickness, new kid.

Private life settles down, play returns to usual standards. Makes sense to me.

Brodie was bad playing the left side under Gully. Other than that, he's been solid his whole career.

I would be fine with Brodie back on a decent contract but I think Barrie adds an offensive dimension that could help the Flames and being a RHS is icing on the cake.
