On Boltmann the player, from the limited amount of video I was able to find on him, he is a defenseman that likes to jump up into the rush a lot. This indicates to me that he both wants to be a leader on the ice and go where the puck is offensively, but also that he’s probably playing at a level too low for his skillset right now in Minnesota high school. On the good side, he’s already committed to Minnesota of the NCAA, which will be a great place to develop for up to four years.

Long wiry cool and confident defender who displays a good puck skills and feet to advance pucks and defend charging attackers.Confident in his decisions and his ability to advance pucks to his teammates. Uses his reach and stick to disrupt the opposing team’s flow, and has excellent range of motion which is key to his keeping things steady and simple as part of the State championship winning team’s core.

Feels like another Nodler range prospect where it was kinda like, "Huh?". But Nodler had an invite to the US hockey camp thing... so maybe there's more to it?

He and his older brother(D1 QB, great baseball player) are uber athletic. Father used to coach the football team, and ran(runs?) the weight room. Boltmann is strong, fast, and is simply a born athlete. I have no idea how, or if he his game will translate to the NHL. He certainly is very good at the HS level. I believe that he was one of about 7-8 players nominated for the "Mr. Hockey" award for the best HS player in MN. I have seen him play quite few times in previous years. Nothing stuck out other than that he acquitted himself well playing against guys 2-3 years older than him. Simply a good two way Dman.

Analysis: Boltmann, like the other Minnesota D-men in the draft is more defender than offender. But let’s face it, stopping opponents from scoring goals is just as important as scoring goals. And Boltmann is good at stopping opponents. Again, size and skill win the day with Boltmann, and he has obviously benefited from the coaching of former NHL defenseman Curt Giles.

Not expecting much here but a nice swing. Hes a long way off so you never know but that video was awesome. Love that it shows just how special it is to be drafted.

Scout who recomended him coached him for a couple of years.
Sort of insight and trust in him as a player and person that would lead me to believe there might be potential there.

Boltmann has committed to Notre Dame. Was previously committed to University of Minnesota.

He is not lighting it up on his current team. Perhaps Minn rescinded their offer??

According to this he decommitted on the week of Dec 3 which was 3 games into the season: https://gopherpucklive.com/staudache...phers-d-corps/
To pull a offer after 3 games seems like a big knee jerk reaction.
It is more likely Notre Dame offered him more ice time and a bigger role in their program. He may also prefer the catholic private university of Notre Dame as a school more than Minnesota, given his twitter profile is a Bible verse.
Also here is a list of Notre Dame Alumni who played in the NHL

Looks like another reason he decided to go to ND is because they are letting him play in the NCAA right away.
https://www.ndinsider.com/hockey/iri...19c139dfe.html
He has enrolled in ND and looks like he will make his NCAA debut in January.

Wheeler posted his list of risers and fallers of the 2020 draft. Boltmann made the list as a faller:
Quote:
Jake Boltmann, RHD, Calgary Flames/Lincoln Stars/University of Notre Dame
Drafted: No. 80
My final ranking: Not ranked in my top 100
Boltmann was one of the more head-scratching selections on draft day for me (I wouldn’t have considered drafting him at all, to be blunt, let alone in the third round) and then he had a difficult year split between the USHL and college, going pointless in a combined 25 games. The production itself isn’t the end of the world. He plies his trade as a tough-minutes defender. But I’d be pretty shocked if he developed into more than a low-level pro player on the back of that quality. More and more, the prospects that make it as third-pairing or fourth-line types in the NHL are the ones who were first-pairing players and first-line players at lower levels. It’s hard to go from a guy who looked like a depth player at lower levels and become something more than that as you progress up ranks. Boltmann’s going to be a good two-way type in time in college, but there are some clear holes to fill to be more than that.

Hopefully the Flames re-think their thought process that led them to this pick.
To make it worse, the Oilers picked Carter Savoie 20 picks later, and he 20 points in 24 games for Denver.
Daniil Chechelev was picked between them, and he had a pretty good year.
