John Matisz @MatiszJohn
Per sources, Mikko Koivu and Columbus are close on a 1-year deal for roughly $1.5 million.

He takes after his brother. Saku in Anaheim was so weird.

Why is that weird? Spends his whole career in Minnesota, the team that drafted him. Is 37 and now UFA and still wants to play. Columbus gave him a contract. Seems pretty standard straight forward stuff.

Well that's just a weird decision. Didn't see this coming at all. Koivu doesn't have much left in the tank, and the Jackets aren't really close to being a contender. I'm just surprised for both parties.

I think the Jackets disagree with you. They think they can contend and that’s what is guiding their decisions.

All I meant is that it’ll be weird to see him in a different jersey.

They can disagree, but they'd be wrong. They have a good team overall, but no elite talent that can take them over the top in the playoffs.

But Koivu really doesn't have much left in his tank at all. If he isn't completely done, which it appears that he is, he's clearly miles past his best and has been since 2017-18.
Head scratching that any NHL team still wants him at this point to me.

I completely agree. But after somehow the Stars ended up in the Finals (including their star goaltender being injured), they've got to think anything is possible now.

Seth Jones could activate a superhero mode like Karlsson did for OTT a few years ago

I mean, that's the closest guy they have to a true superstar, but even he isn't at that level, and I'm a Jones fan.
It's a team full of Charlie Simmers and Kevin Stevens. Great complementary players to superstars, but take them away from a star and they're just "good", not great.
