Oilers are going to have to target a goalie in a trade that doesn't have trade protection. No NHL goalie with a half a brain in his head and isn't desperate beyond belief wants to go to that defensive tire fire.
The fricken Red Wings just got a free agent NHL goalie to sign with them before the oilers did lol

Oilers are going to make a trade for Fleury. Help Vegas out, of course.

Oilers discussion aside...
This is a really good deal for Detroit. Greiss is a very good 1A type option to pair with Bernier as a 1B. Money is very affordable, as is the term. Perfect stop-gap option until the Wings are actually ready to compete.
That being said, they will still be the worst team in the league this year by a fair margin. LOTS of work to do for Yzerman to build this team. But he's going to have plenty of wiggle room next year.
As of right now, the Wings only have 1 defenseman signed past this year (DeKeyser), 4 forwards (Larkin, Nielsen, Fabbri, Zadina), and one goalie (Greiss). There are 3 current RFAs that will be signed without any major issue (Bertuzzi, Mantha, Timashov).
That's 7 forwards, most of which are good, but just one defenseman and one goalie who are NHL caliber and experienced.
I can see them being pretty aggressive leading up to the expansion draft to pry players out of situations where they cannot be protected. Getting an asset back for a player you may lose to expansion always seems better than getting nothing. Could be a very interesting year for Detroit. Stay tuned.

Glad the Oilers didn’t go after Greiss. Not a terrible deal though.

Have to think the Oilers are going to look at trading for Kuemper or something.

JG13 - I think Kuemper is going to be the guy. Or really, while not ideal, I’d be just ok with running Smith. This season is going to be quick and heavy with something like 15 games a month, so a decent tandem is what I want. However Koskinen played great last year, so i don’t think we need a crazy huge name. I’d be ok with Fleury too with retained salary.

Could see that, if it weren't for Fleury's NTC.

This. Then Vegas will sign Pietro because of the Oilers stupidity.

You're going to pay a heavy price, GM's and players know that Holland is now on the verge of desperation.

Totally agree with you that it’s a great pickup for Detroit. I was thinking they might sign Greiss. Out of all the teams in the league (ok, other than the Flames), I have been following Detroit the closest. I’m just intrigued by their rebuild and curious to see what they do going forward. Stay tuned indeed!
