True enough. At the same time though is Burke going to be in the spotlight enough as the President? Feaster is the GM and you would think he would still be the go to guy for media availability when moves are made.

I think he can work in this market. Calgary is a hockey town but not overbearing like Toronto or Vancouver. IMO it's a win for him as he gets to build the team from scratch with a few good young pieces intact and will be free to spend as much money as he had in Toronto without the overbearing media and Don Cherry overanalyzing every little thing he says and does. Sure he will have to deal with hacks like Francis but that's nothing compared to Toronto. I would expect that Feaster and Hartley will both be gone next offseason.

I hope he learned from his mistakes with the Leafs and doesn't try any quick fixes. At least we know the days of the Flames being a soft team are coming to an end.

So what? But if you want to talk about that team let's the Burke model with that team was seemingly...

A: Trade away high draft picks,
B: Overpay guys like Colton Orr & Mike Komisarek
C: Hired his buddy as coach gave him a raise and extension and then fired him a mere three months after.

... Not something I want for the Flames. Burke as head of the Leafs is a story of mismanagement and waste. I've said elsewhere that I think the Leafs slinking into the playoffs was just a bit of luck born out of the shortened season. If you wanna be happy about the prospect of Burke ruining the rebuild in a dogged pursuit of truculence go right ahead but I won't be.

Can't wait for the first time Francis tries to get all chummy with him.

He didn't trade away high draft picks because nobody knew what the draft picks were when he dealt them. Colton Orr was signed to a 1 million dollar deal, not exactly a crippling contract and not a deal that affected the Leafs ability to make moves or manage the Cap at all, if that is your big complaint then I would say that is a plus for Burke. Komisarek is a bad deal but hard to find a GM without a bad deal to their name, if perfection is what we are looking for I think the team will be looking for a long time. He didn't hire Wilson and made the right move, friend or not, in firing him and bringing in a better coach.

Looking at that team he moved out an older guy in Beauchemin to bring in a better player in Lupul and a young prospect in Gardiner, made a solid pick with Kadri, traded away Schenn for a very good return in JVR, got the team a top line talent in Kessel and brought in a number of support guys that teams need to win in the league. It wasn't a super Cup winning success but the Leafs are much better off when he left than what they were when they got there and that is the least successful of all the times he was a GM.

If you just want to focus on the negatives of his time as a GM (which is a whole lot longer than his time in Toronto) while ignoring the much, much longer list of great moves he made go ahead. I guess it fits the narative you have built up about him "ruining the rebuild" but if you want to actually look at what he has done and look at the picks/young guys he has brought to the organizations he has been apart you will see a record of improving teams and leaving them in better shape when he left in terms of the future and current outlooks than when he arrived.

He's entertaining and as good as most GMs in this league. Sounds fun so why not?

I think this is great news if it happens.

I don't think Feaster has been a very good GM and like him or not, Burke does build more competitive (even winning) teams.

I would just look forward to not getting fleeced in trades all the time!

My initial reaction was one of disgust. But now that I think about it, it may be an improvement. He's done good and questionable things, but what GM hasn't? I agree with the shuffling idea of him as GM, Feaster as President and King as CEO of CFSE (or whatever it will be called). Guess we shall see what happens!

Oh, I'm 6'8"

I agree. Burke is a tried and true GM. A good hockey guy that can get deals done and a well respected individual around the NHL. I would love to see him helm this team as GM.

If this means Ken King is gone, or at least out of the hockey side of things, the I'm sold.

Pretty much my reaction too, although, disgust is too strong a word to describe my initial feelings. Interesting to ponder, even more interesting if it comes to be!

If Kessel signed the offer sheet, then that was the option he chose

Just can't see Feaster as Burke's boss.

Overall I like Burke's body of work, but if he's going to be our GM I'll be a little nervous that he might want to trade away Gaudreau for someone more truculent or something like that.

On another note, did anyone else see this thread and wonder if korzym was just trolling us as payback for the Russia thread?
