Default 2022 Cavalry FC and CPL Thread

I guess it's 2022 now so new thread time.

Oliver Minatel just announced on Instagram that he is leaving the club after 3 years. I get why this is happening, but really gutted to see him go.

I'm gutted too, although I saw this happening a mile away. He needs a fresh start for his career, given tenure, injuries, and playing time.

I suspect we'll start to see a few new names in the coming weeks.

Does anyone remember when in the non-COVID 2019 season did things like the schedule release, training camps & jersey reveals took place?

Central midfield hasn't taken a step forward since Buscher left. Hopefully they have something up their sleeve for the offseason.

If I look at Ale who has an Italian passport, I definitely think he could have made the move to Europe to where he could continue his development. Terran is the same who possesses an American passport, but they chose to stay in Canada which is their right. I had bigger hopes for those two to be honest.

...

You know, if you can’t beat them, sign them. As a club we move on and we’ll be back stronger next year.
Some shade in the press release from Pa-Modou Kah damn.

Wow, I wonder how that happened? They allude to Pacific not being happy about how this went down, and I’m curious what happened.

Just makes Forge even more loathed around the league.

Excellent.

Ahinga Selemani Lands In Malta

Interesting comment:

With the Maltese Premier League season set to end up in late April, it’s possible that Selemani could return in time to feature in the 2022 Canadian Premier League season, though what may happen after his Maltese Premier League campaign wraps remains to be seen.

Was not expecting to read that news on a Monday morning. Kind of weird that he's stepping down to pursue a club in Windsor, where there's no real demand for one, while FC Edmonton is desperate to find new ownership to survive.

So we now have a third "expansion" location where a group has been given rights, but nothing really beyond that.

I really don't get the tactic.

I don't see Windsor ever supporting a CPL club, so this is another strange announcement.

Windsor is the size of Kelowna. Why couldn't it support a club?

I would argue that smaller cities with little competition for professional sports are a better fit for an expansion team than somewhere like Vancouver, which has the Whitecaps and other teams competing for disposable income.

Vancouver makes sense from a strategic perspective but small markets make a lot of sense in terms of getting actual butts in seats.

Windsor is a small market, it has about 300k in its metro area. And it's far enough away from Hamilton where fans don't have to pick between which team to support. Windsor already has Windsor TFC in L1O, and association with TFC since 2016. Notable other teams also include the Windsor Express, a basketball team in the NBL since 2012-2013, and the Windsor Spitfires. Both of these play in the same arena with a capacity of about 6500.

To be honest, I don't see Windsor being a bad market. And it would probably do well to enhance Ontario rivalries through the Corridor.

Just me, but growth of the CPL - and its stability - will need a strong and growing fanbase in southern Ontario.

I actually think Windsor (more like 500k when you consider Chatham-Kent is only about 55 mins away) is an inspired choice for a few reasons:

1. Proximity to Detroit. Windsor is very popular with 19 and 20 year old Michiganders for obvious reasons, and tapping into even a very small part of that 5m + metro will add a lot. Expect some cross border (eventually) friendlies and contests with Detroit’s USLC team.

2. Proximity to York and Forge. Should have lots of away fans since it’s maybe 4hr by VIA Rail or Highway to the GTA from there. Easy day trips or overnight road trips. Kelowna might have that too, but not like this.

3. Lack of competition. No major league teams and the Spits get pretty good support.

4. Reduced travel costs. I am sure a big scheduling priority will be for the West teams and HFX to do long road stretches where they can go Windsor to Ottawa all on bus which will be much cheaper than flying. The Ontario teams will be able to bus for roughly half of their road games. That’s going to add up.

I know everyone is clamouring for QC and/or Montreal, but clearly there aren’t solid enough ownership groups yet, or some serious hurdles. For now, a critical mass in Southern Ontario is key.

I should rephrase. I don't see Windsor having a CPL club anytime soon. Which continues on the tradition of expansion related announcements that aren't really announcing anything solid.

I mean, is that "soon"? No, but it's not the distant future either.
