Kirk had to build a cannon and make gunpowder to kill the Gorn.
They were talked again after TOS but kind of forgettable.

I am not sure if this is a real retcon. Enterprise already established the gorn as a fair bit more lethal and dangerous than Kirk was shown with, of course lol. I also think there's good speculation last page as to the lifecycle of a gorn that still allows for "civilized" - sort of - adult gorn.
In TNG era, the gorn are still a very much independent civilization. Other "killing machines" also exist- the tholians for example.

Another civilization that is warlike and lurking in Unknown space (perfect for 5 year mission exploration...) are the Breen. Or showing a formal meeting with the cardassians.
These might be interesting things for SNW to explore later.

I really hope we keep getting new Trek of this calibre, and I'd love to see a series between either Enterprise and SNW, or SNW and TNG. I just hope they have the guts to move away from the TOS era stuff though, as that's been their crutch lately

I'd rather see something that isn't a prequel - e.g. something set around the time Picard is set, but with the quality/consistency and episodic structure of SNW.

from what we've seen of the mid 22nd to the start of the 25th century (hell even the 31st but I pretend that doesn't exist), Star Trek is consistently based around warp, transporters, phasers, photon torpedoes, shields, saucers, and nacelles. progress is surprisingly slow, almost like the Star Wars universe where thousands of years don't really mean much for how things look or behave.
I think they can tell good new stories in any of these eras as long as they don't keep bumping into the Skywalker family, I mean Kirk and Picard's crews.

Personally I would love the forgotten era. Give me something in Enterprise B and C eras. Dangerous Klingons, beginning of Cardassian wars, lots of undiscovered space and unexplored plotlines still. There's also a huge gap of written history that characters in future plots don't really reference, so it's not like we'd have to work around large events (save the Khitomer accords, but you could use that and the lead up as a potential backdrop for a season with associated drama between romulans and Klingons.)

I'd love the pre federation stuff,
I still think there's a great Khan story out there.
The Romulan War could be cool. Another one would be to go way back in time to the split of the Vulcan's and Romulans.
One thing I liked about Enterprise btw is they were completely outgunned by everyone in the first year at least. Slow conventional Torpedos that would have no effect on shields, low powered phasers. Grapplers instead of Tractor Beams. Human's were literally the 98 lb weaklings of the galaxy.

Star Trek General Discussion
I just don’t know how they reconcile Khan with any of the timelines. Though with the 40th anniversary of TWOK it would be a nice nod to the movie if they could pull it off.

They need to leave Khan be. Into Darkness was enough of a steaming pile, and Nemesis was definitely cribbing far too much inspiration from TWOK too. Like Star Wars continuously falling back to stories about the Skywalker family, Star Trek needs to tell new stories about new characters.

But this was seriously...animals. I know they were young babies and everything, but...its just a stretch. They can easily write/talk their way out of it, but it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Remember that the Warrior caste is only one part of Klingon subculture.
This was explained to Archer as he was waiting trial and had a Klingon lawyer.
So they do have scientists and engineers as well.

And the shop keeper caste as well
Shop keeper - "You dishonor my house by asking for a discount"
Client - "Paying full price is a dishonor to my house"

I enjoyed the finale. Great bookend to the first episode.
I'd hoped we'd get a 2 parter (like in TNG) but I guess they had to see if people liked the show first. I looked at wikipedia to remind me what the finale of S1 of TNG was. Funny enough it has similar overall plot:
Filming has already wrapped on season 2. Those effects folks better work overtime because I want it now.

After last week's episode, I watched The Arena on Crave to remind myself of what was said/known about the Gorn then.
Now, after this week's episode, I'm going to have to watch Balance of Terror to see how Kirk handled things without Pike's interference.
So, if Paramount's plan is to get people to re-watch the Original Series, it's working.
