They have yet to assemble a Hockey Operations team. There's going to be a whole whack of openings. They're on the clock now.

Having a Head Coach with a Stanley Cup ring would look pretty good.

This is one of the potential scenarios that had me annoyed that Tre filled the role so quickly.

Who would he be coaching? They won't have a team for at least two years. If that was his plan, he should have stayed on for his automatic extension.

How do you not come to terms with the coach who just took your team to the promised land?? That entire team sacked up and played balls to the wall for that coach. As much as OV Backstrom and the other long term players were something to play for, Trotz was just as much of a rallying point as any of the players.

I figured he might retire if he won it all, as there were some rumours about that going on. But to let your head coach walk who helped you have a Cup parade after 40+ years?

That's crazy to me.

Personally, I think he'll take the Islanders' job. Lou Lamoriello reportedly wants a new head coach hired by Friday. The timing couldn't be better.

Seattle will get some interest, given expansion teams can now ice a fairly competitive team from the get-go.

The way I look at the situation is how much more tenure does Trotz have with the Capitals even though they just won the cup?

Considering he was in Nashville forever, a budget team with most likely a very low salary of probably less than a million give or take a bit. He then moves onto Washington for 4 seasons and is rumored to be making $1.5 million. He wins the cup and is due for a serious pay raise by SOMEBODY and he is probably in line for a 4-5 year deal at $4-5 million.

I just don't see Washington wanting to commit to a total of 8-9 years (4+ extension) on a coach and give him a $16-20 million contract going forward when all the reporting is showing that there is a beef with both sides, Trotz wanting one last payday and Washington management having a preferred guy they want for what is probably much less salary and some new fresh ideas.

And some lip readers caught the conversation between Torts and Trotz after Caps beat out Columbus.....you could see Torts say something to Trotz and he responded with what looked like "I'm not coming back"

If Trotz goes to the Islanders then Tavares will re-sign.

Also Alan Vigneault goes to Washington

Tavares will re-sign in a situation he isn’t thrilled with, because of a coach who in all likelyhood will be there no longer than half of his contract?

There is absolutely zero indication JT is not happy with the NYI. That is pure fan speculation.

On the other hand, if they wait for Trotz, Peters could have either stayed with the Canes or found a job elsewhere
And you end up with neither.

You're working off the assumption that Trotz would
A) Say yes to Calgary
B) Calgary would pay his price

Well if he was thrilled he’d be signed... Of course it’s speculation, but it’s a fair assumption that he isn’t 100% set on wanting to play there. I don’t see how a coach impacts your decision on an 8 year contract.

I doubt Trotz would have ended up in Calgary. No way they would have shelled out what he was asking for.

Plus like Jiri said, you could miss out on both your coaches and end up sticking with another GG type coach.
