Doesn't he kind of suck at defense, though? He's incredible offensively for sure and I know you can't have it all in a player, but 8+ a year for 8 years I'd want someone who isn't subpar in their own end.

I think describing him as subpar defensively is an exaggeration. He isn’t elite in his own end that’s for sure... but he’s far from subpar.

Burns is signed for 8 years at 8M, he's far worse in his own end and will be 40 by the time the contract ends.
OEL will be signed as a UFA with a contract that expires when he's 35.
If you want an elite offense and defensive defenseman as UFA who's going to be under 35, you're not looking at 8M, you're looking at 12M. Wait until Doughty re-signs or hits UFA next year.

As a percentage of cap it isn't that bad. AAV's are not static year to year.
Edit to add: makes Gio seem like a crazy bargain. And Brodie too.

They could trade a 7th round pick for Sidney Crosby and my reaction would still be... meh.

Wasn't Phoenix doing well towards the end of the season? Maybe he sees long-term success?
I will remind OEL that you can't play golf in April, May and June if you plan to make the playoffs, even though it's nice to play 18 holes in Arizona.
