Didn't Burke take the hockey ops position so that King could concentrate more on the new arena? And he's done..what..exactly with all that time? So little to show for it. And agonizingly, glacially slow to come up with a feasible plan.
He sounds too positive about everything to come across as honest. Just promotes, promotes, promotes. And talks. But nothing gets done.
And yeah, it's likely he had a hand, along with the owners, in Iginla overcooking here and those sad last few attempts to fill his line with aging, overpaid guys to try and squeak into another likely first round exit.

I had a beer with Mike Keenan a few years ago (not just me, a bunch of minor hockey coaches) and he said Ken King was all over things when he coached here.
Paraphrasing from memory, but he wanted to sit in on special teams meeting with the coaching staff as an example.
Not a good thing.

Unless Dean Lombardi wants to be GM, yeah, I guess we re-sign Treliving.

I hope to god Treliving wouldn't get passed over for Lombardi. The Flames need to aggressively ensure that he remains here.

Ken King is the definition of micro-manager. Goes back to his newspaper days.

Honestly "Fire Ken King" should be a thread. If Tre leaves it will be because of KK's meddling in hockey operations.

Seems like there are too many rumours about King to think there's nothing to them. I've said this before but what the heck kind of pictures does he have on Edwards? That's the only reason I can see why he's in the position he is. It's one thing that he is completely bungling the arena issue. Quite another if he's hurting hockey operation's ability to field the best product they can.

George Johnson interview with Treliving: https://www.nhl.com/flames/news/trel...18/c-288977518
Quote:
"Today,'' he reports, "there was lots of mad. You need to work through that. Glen (Gulutzan) and I locked ourselves in a room and talked over everything.
"You lose and it's like a funeral, right? You cry, then you think of a few good stories and you laugh. Then you remember what's happened and you cry again and throw something at the wall."
There are number of issues to be addressed as the organization begins planning and plotting for September, with an eye to qualifying for the Elite 8 again and burrowing further into April, early May and hopefully further.
First and foremost, the future of the general manager, without a contract heading into the 2017-2018 campaign.
"Tomorrow,'' Treliving says, "is a players' day. Next week we'll think about my situation.
"Look, I love this team. And this sounds so goofy but I haven't really spent a whole lot of time thinking about me. Honestly.
"You're so invested in what's happening the last eight days. Until that thing" - Ryan Getzlaf's goal with 6.7 seconds left to seal the deal, and the series, for Anaheim - "went into the empty net, our focus was tying it up, winning the game, getting back on a plane and all that.
"There are two sides to this, we all get to talk and see where we go.
"It's like my taxes. I don't do my taxes until the day before I have to file them."

Doesn't seem like a guy who's polishing his resume.

Yep. And though I wasn't directly involved in the labour brouhaha, he was not considered a good executive. He was moved out. He had no understanding about how newsrooms worked. Constant meddling.

And IMO, Kings meddling with hockey stuff more or less ended when Burke came aboard, and only reason he was involved in first place is because the former GM encouraged it/covered his own butt by having his bosses help him out in matters they had no exprience in.

Treliving still has problems to fix. I think the Flames want him to continue to fix them.
He has had more check marks than black marks.
He probably gets a contract for another 3 years.

I've been told the only reason why a new contract hasn't been signed is that Treliving wants assurance from ownership that King will stop meddling in hockey ops decisions.
He and Burke have a good working relationship but King insists on being the final approval on deals.
The most recent example I was given:
Apparently at the deadline a deal was made for Bishop but they needed Kings approval to proceed. They were given 15 mins to finalize by Yzerman. They tried to reach King on the phone and couldn't get him within the window, so he was dealt to LA.
Take for what it's worth (not a Julius example).

Friedman on 960 says Treliving has made it clear he wants to stay in Calgary.
He also thinks the price for Treliving has gone up and it will come down to the offer the Flames make. If Treliving thinks it is a low ball offer, then it will be a problem.
He also said it is likely ultimately Edwards and Kings' decision. Burke will recommend the Flames keep Treliving but otherwise won't be involved.
He is also hearing like 50 people in the Flames organization don't have contracts past this year but doesn't have any idea if that is true.

He also said he's heard there are over 50 contracts within the organization expiring. That it's unusual and there's a lot of work to do.
