Likely because they have been fortunate enough not to take a puck in the ear.

After taking a puck in the ear that would soon require stitches, the water from the shower hitting that ear felt like a solid punch in the side of the head.

Little.
Zuccarello forgot how to talk for a bit in 15 or 16 after taking a puck in the head.
Manny Malholtra had a career ending eye injury. Oilers prospect Ryan Mantha as well.

I can't really think of a logical reason not to use better helmets and full cages.

I'm fine if they don't because its not my well being at risk, but it makes sense to protect the players even if they themselves aren't in favour.

Players didn't choose to wear helmets either, as they didn't want to be thought of as weak, once it was mandated they all seemed pretty happy to wear them though, I don't hear anyone complaining.

None of those are ear injuries which we're talking about.

And now Roenick on the Red Wings got hit in the side of the head with a slap shot from the point.

There's gonna be a real bad incident eventually that's gonna shock the NHL culture bad enough that masks will become mandatory. Youth levels have to wear it, so it's not unreasonable to grandfather it into the leagues like they have with the helmet, and eye shields itself. The players wouldn't know playing hockey any different, and it would just be continuing off from the face shield implementation since it obviously doesn't go far enough.

I think mandated equipment is often silently welcomed by players, who otherwise don’t want to seem wimpy (see mandatory visors).
