Yes Buxton clearly deserved it this year, but are people still on the Pillar train? I like the guy, but how many of his dives are show dives? He gives the fans what they want, but quite a few of them are needless dives, they just stick in the fan's heads.

I don't know if they are show dives. It sure looks like he is in top gear and getting full extension to get to the balls.

The problem is, is that he doesn't take the best route to the ball or have the best reaction time therefor requiring him to make these circus catches.

I wouldn't necessarily say that he doesn't take the best route or have the best reaction time. He can't run as fast as many of the other center fielders which is the main reason why he needs to make the circus catches.

Yup. They are out of necessity. Pillar will not have a career that is successful for very long. He needs to play balls to the wall each game to make up for him lack of natural talent. Extremely hard worker and you have to respect that, but the Jays should sell high on Pillar (assuming they can).

Meh, there's enough evidence that he is a TV diver. He's an above average defensive CF, but less than replacement level hitting wise. I understand the love, and during his 5 WAR season he was crazy good, but he needs an amazing defensive season to make up for his league average (or usually below) bat. I am fine with handing the reigns to Teoscar Hernandez, though he is old for a prospect and shouldn't be given a long rope

You guys don't seriously think he makes those dives for show do you... he plays at the Skydome. Nobody is going to do a full running speed body fall on to carpeted concrete for "show".

That being said they should trade him if they can get someone decent for him... see if you can swap him for Dee Gordon and have Gordon takes reps in LF so you can use him as a super-utility guy for the inevitable Tulo/Travis injuries and Have Alford take over in CF.

Meant to mention it earlier but if anyone hasn't heard it sounds like Shohei Otani is going to be posted. Probably something on the order of 0.00001% chance he signs with the Jays but still that's exciting just as a fan of baseball.

I've heard all the writers raving about him. What's the coles notes on him and his abilities?

Imagine a player that's essentially Yu Darvish when he comes out to pitch every fifth day but instead of not playing the other four days, he plays DH and on those days he's Hideki Matsui in his prime.

I think AL teams have the inside track on him. He's just more valuable to AL teams because of the DH rule. In Japan, he wouldn't play outfield the day before he pitched so because NL teams wouldn't be able to use him quite as much, they probably won't be justified to pay him as much as an AL team.

He'll probably to the Yankees is my guess since it'll come down to dollars.

Would he hit for himself when he pitches? It could allow a team to use a defensive specialist every fifth game and use the DH for him rather than the pitcher. For example, using a guy like Goins to give a rest to Tulo or Travis without having to go through the pain of watching him hit.

I'm sure some team's would be against him playing at all on his off days.

That's really interesting. Why wouldn't the NL be more interested him him considering pitchers hit? And even if it does come down to dollars, are the Yankees that plush with cash at the moment?

It doesn't come down to dollars with Otani, or at least I thought I read that somewhere.

Because of his age I think there is a limit to how much he can be signed for, therefore it will come down to fit and basically just what team he wants to go to.

If I was Otani, I'd sign in LA.

Huge market
Rich ownership, deep pockets
Good climate
Great young team
And one of the best farm systems as well

They are poised to be competitive for a freaking long time.

It's more about what he would be interested in. The AL works better if he really wants to be a two-way player because in the NL he'd have to play a position or be limited to pinch-hitting while in the AL he can just be the DH.

The Red Sox & Yankees strike me as the most likely.

I don’t see the Sox.

Texas , Seattle and Yanks in AL would be my guess

If I’m a pitcher and I care about personal stats, I stay as far away from the American League East as possible. Small fields full of power hitters, but money talks. The NL is where it’s at for pitchers.

I think Otani ends up with the Angels, or Mariners. West coast.

The targets that I would like for the Jays would be to solidify the infield. Go after Profar, Iglesias and Dee Gordon. Any two of them, and (as much as I like the guy) trade Travis before he gets this years injury and move on from the Barney/Goins style infield depth.

Personally I would also trade Pillar while he is arguably at the most value for his career and give 2 outfield spots to Alford/Smith Jr/Hernandez. Eventually they need to graduate some homegrown position players.

I'd deal Pillar and sign Lorenzo Cain and Gordon. Profar obviously has an upside, but reminds me of Colby Rasmus in that they have the tools, but not quite that factor to make it work for them. Gordon is what he is at this point. As for Travis, I'd keep him for now. I find it hard to believe he'd get injured again. I personally feel these are one time injuries he's experienced and not something chronic like back problems, so I'd deal him when his value is peak. They definitely have to be a faster team though, and this seems like one of those rosters that isn't here or there, so I'm not sure how they go all-in for a rebuild. Tweaks aren't going to make this team a contender - they really have to deal for good value for 2 years from now. I don't see who they could target (or know enough about prospects to assess that), but I do think they should deal upper to middle age guys who are at their peak.

Alex Anthopoulos to sign Braves deal today
http://slam.canoe.com/Slam/Baseball/.../22764730.html

Quote:
ORLANDO - Former Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos jumped on a plane for Atlanta on Monday afternoon where he will be officially announced as the new Braves’ GM later in the day.

First reported by Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Anthopoulos will leave his position as the Los Angeles Dodgers’ VP of baseball operations to return to the ranks as a Major League general manager.

...

The Braves are rebuilding, though they have a number of proven standouts and talented youngsters on the Major League roster.
Can we trade Tulo to them for one/more of their young pieces?
