Cheque.

Huh. Hoist by my own petard. I hate it when that happens. We did take a Costco break so maybe I have not received the coupon yet?

And chef's kiss on the Cheque. Mate. Well done.

Co-op though basically changed their whole system from mailing out actual cheques to just applying the credit directly into their app so you could use it at the checkout.

Some of the comments people posted to the story when they made that change were great: “it’s my money. I want to do whatever I want with it”, “you’re holding my money hostage”, “boycott Co-op!”.

Like, okay, you obviously shop at Co-op regularly enough to have gotten a dividend of note, so relax and use it there.

The only reason I got a rebate in the past was from buying gas there. So using the rebate for expensive groceries somewhere I never shop is actually quite a bit worse for me than getting a cheque.

I'm not all butt-hurt about it, but I did stop buying gas there.

Can you use it for gas?

Do you have to download an app? That is more annoying than COOP credit. God apps suck.

Their app sucks extraordinarily. The fact that they can’t do everything just from my Co-op # is problematic. That it’s a multi-step process to redeem the rewards is an awkward process.

Yes, you can use the Coop "Bonus Cash" on gas. I did just last week. You can use the money you get from buying groceries when buying gas, and money you get from buying gas on groceries.

The most annoying thing I find about the app is the need to "activate" your discount offers each week. Of course, every store does that, so you can't avoid it by shopping somewhere else. At least with Safeway and Superstore you activate all the offers at once rather than activating each one separately.

Essentially the same for us.

I'm not all butt-hurt about it, but I did stop buying gas there.

I'm an old Luddite but the app sucks, it was so much simpler getting a cheque every year. On top of it, at the gas stations you cannot use the app at the pump, if you want to use whatever offer their is you have to go inside and see the cashier.

They can keep the $21.14 then. Like I need a 648th username and password out there.

Not anymore. I think this is a relatively recent change, but I was able to use my "Bonus Cash" with pay-at-the-pump last week.

One of my many jobs (in order to exist day to day) is working at Co-op. The executive their is basically a cabal of evil cartoon villains (luckily balanced by a pretty clueless union), but the app is one of the better things that have run down the pipe.

Yes, they only wanted it because of the same revenue streams that every place, from Tim's to Cobb's enjoy, but the app creator actually did a pretty good job, and I've seen some pretty savvy customers come away with deals below cost, because of the bonus cash. Those are probably loopholes that will disappear, but right now it's pretty effective if there is something that you like and use on offer.

I have way less issue with grocery chain apps, as I do with apps to tiny chains. At some point, just have better pricing.

As a further aside, Co-op pricing is nonsense, and comes from up on high, but that also means that they don't understand quality, and if you are knowledgeable you can find deals, because the people doing pricing do not understand the value if it's high. Sometimes they price low end and high end really closely.

I stopped in a Co-op yesterday (Richmond Rd. location) just to check out the prices and grab a few things, and altogether the pricing is "high end". Everything I happened to look at was 10-25% higher than the nearby Safeways in Westhills and Glamorgan.

I don't want to support the Sobeys/Empire... empire... but god-damn, Calgary Co-op makes it tough to shop there on pricing alone. And given they get the food from Save-on/Pattison anyway... feels like no incentive to shop there to "support local" anyway.

Co-op and sobeys are for the rich and elite.

I honestly don't know how people even shop there.

No frills is so much cheaper. I think I only used to go to Sobeys for their apple pies but they changed those and now they're gross.

It is almost like if they make it as hard as possible they get to keep the money!

The Food Chain as I see it:

Lowest Cost:
No Frills (never been there but as some said)
Superstore/Walmart
Sobeys/Safeway
Co-op
Save-On
Superstore Liqour Store (Pop only)

I don't see the point of going to the most expensive place when other options are so close.
