Jimmy Howard signs 1 year extension with the Red Wings worth $4 million plus bonuses
Dan Rosen
@drosennhl
Jimmy Howard is close to signing a 1-year contract extension with the Red Wings. Howard said some language is being worked out, but it's going to get done. Ken Holland confirmed. Howard said he's fine with a 1-year deal. He had no desire to leave Detroit. "It's home," he said.
Kevin Weekes @KevinWeekes
Further to Howards’ soon to be announced 1 year extension with the @DetroitRedWings ,I’m told it’s around 4 Million for the 3X All-Star.
@NHL @NHLNetwork @NHLdotcom .
John Shannon @JSportsnet
Jimmy Howard’s new 1 year deal is for 4 million dollars. Plus playoff bonuses.

Howard will be 35 in a week. Age-35+ players can also receive bonuses (Jagr's deal with Calgary last year included them, for instance).

The league office probably just laughed when they saw the word "playoffs" in the bonus clauses and let it go through knowing there's little chance of that being achieved in Detroit any time soon.

Performance bonuses can be offered to:
1. players on ELC
2. players on 1 year deals and over 35 year old signing age
3. players who have missed significant time due to injury and sign a one year deal
Howard is apparently willing to sign 1 year deals with Detroit until he retires. Likely all of them are going to have performance bonuses.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
$5.1M AAV. But $1.1M of that is entirely based on playoff bonuses. If the Wings don’t make the playoffs next season, no bonus and Howard would get only his $4M salary.
CapFriendly @CapFriendly
#LGRW have signed goalie Jimmy Howard to a 1 year contract extension.
The contract is a 35+ deal and consists of $4,000,000 in base salary, plus up to $1,100,000 in various performance bonus.

Howard’s contract does NOT have any No Trade Clauses. So zero limitations on DET’s ability to trade him.

The best example in recent memory was when Iginla signed that one year deal in Boston for a cap hit of like 1.2 million, but the bonuses were so attainable that it was pretty obvious he was going to make the full 6 million.

So if he gets traded at the deadline next year would his new team making the playoffs be on the hook for those bonuses?

Yes. That was reportedly one of the problems the Flames had with trying to trade Jagr. His performance bonuses would have caused cap issues for contending teams.

It kind of feels like he doesn't want to play anywhere else as why would he take this deal when chances are in free agency he gets at least a two year deal and maybe more money? I don't know how he and his agent couldn't at least use the Koskinen deal as a measuring stick for a short term deal.

It limits a trade to teams that are in the POs but have mediocre goaltending inferior to Howard, which I think will be a pretty small list, or teams that have a goalie injury to deal with just before the deadline.

But that was to manage the cap.
Only $1.2M of Iggy's salary went against the cap that first year. The remainder went against the cap the next year.
