I think it's awesome to see MAF on that list too.

It's really fun to see Flower on that list after essentially being cast off in Pittsburgh. Good for him!

Jay and Dan are sure happy Bobrovsky is mentioned. Smith has been outstanding and it's actually odd seeing a league leading list with a Calgary netminder listed. I've just skipped that list since Kipper.

Bishop, Smith, and Fleury all doing it early on. Funny that these were basically the options we analyzed ad nauseum last spring before Treliving made his move. Considering Smith is the most appealing contract situation of the three, I'd say he made the right move.
Of course, it's still really early.

I'll admit I never really wanted Smith, but it had more to do with age and contract than anything else. Since Treliving got him after Arizona retained salary, the contract isn't an issue at all. The age thing is sort of a "wait and see" to see how he holds up over the course of a full season and if he has any injury troubles (knock on wood). All I wanted out of him was a Sv% of .915-.920. Everything else has been a major bonus, and he's been there for his team as they still figure out the defensive game (again).
I was still pretty adamant about getting 1) Bishop and 2) Fleury. At least I know that my analysis wasn't way off by picking those two. They're really carrying their teams in the early going.

It will be really interesting to see how this list changes throughout the season.
Smith's ranking will go up, obviously.

Friedman made a good point last night. Smith only has one job here in Calgary, stop the puck. In Arizona he had to help sell the game, be the face for the franchise, be a team leader, etc. In Calgary it is just stop the puck.

I was surprised to hear that, but I don't follow that team much. I had thought it was all pretty much Doan doing those things. And that Domi was sort of being groomed for it.

Smith is amazing so far. I feel a lot better about Flames having avg or slightly above avg goaltending by the time this season is all done. And his upside is better than that.
So once again, chapeau off to you Mr. BT!

He's been good, but it's a bit early to get too excited or make any long term judgments. Jacob Markstrom and Jimmy Howard look like world beaters right now too and I don't think anyone was lining up trying to get them.

Miniscule sample size (2 GP?), but being in the top 10 is much better than the alternative. In case you're keeping score, Chad Johnson is #33 on the save percentage list (second last), Brian Elliott is #27 (eighth last).
PS. Smith is also second in the NHL in minutes played and first in shots against (Calgary actually is last in the NHL, averaging 40 shots against per game); Bobrovsky, Howard and Bishop have faced only half as many shots as Smith thus far.

Without Smith this team is either 1-3 or even 0-4. He has been huge so far

Geez .950 is not even good enough to be top 5. Those save percentages are nuts, even for a 4 game sample

That's what happens when the league changes the standard for counting shots on goal.

Gulutzan did say something about that on the FAN this week. I don't know specifics though.
