Leslie Von Houton's parole denied UPDATE: Granted
https://www.ctvnews.ca/world/califor...uten-1.5840553
Quote:
SACRAMENTO, CALIF. -- California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday blocked parole for Charles Manson follower Leslie Van Houten, reversing a panel's recommendation that she be freed after spending a half-century in prison.
Van Houten, 72, “currently poses an unreasonable danger to society if released from prison at this time," Newsom said in his parole review. It was the fifth time that a California governor has rejected her release.
Her attorney, Rich Pfeiffer, disputed that view and said the decision will be appealed in court. He accused Newsom of rejecting parole because he is worried about “his political future" and noted that Van Houten has a spotless prison disciplinary record.
|
Quote:
n his rejection letter, Newsom noted that Van Housen had undergone therapy, earned educational degrees and taken self-help classes in prison and had shown “increased maturity and rehabilitation." But Van Houten also has “gaps in insight" that continue to make her a danger to society, Newsom said.

Out of the family, Tex Watson still survives and is incarcerated. Patricia Krenwinkel remains in prison with her next parole hearing this year. Squeaky Fromme was paroled in 2009, and moved to New York and still proclaims her loyalty to Manson. Clem Grogan was released in 1985. Susan Atkin's died in prison in 2009. Manson died in prison in 2017.

All of Shwarzenegger, Brown and Newsom have blocked parole for Van Houten and Bruce Davis multiple times to this point. Davis' denials must run into the double digits by now.
They're never getting out. You could make a case for those two, I suppose, though somehow it doesn't feel wrong keeping them in jail imo.
For Watson and Krenwinkel, I don't even know why they show up for their hearings. Especially the former. He was the real psychopathic serial killer behind the Tate-LaBianca murders.

The politicization of the justice system in the U.S. is so weird.

At first glance I thought this was about local broadcaster Leslie Horton.

Just odd that they would think she
"currently poses an unreasonable danger to society"
really? that's a crock.

It's quite something. Manson is given the harshest sentence because he's seen as a master manipulator. Yet, Manson's manipulation abilities aren't taken into account at all when discussing paroling a 72 year old woman who committed a crime (a very horrible one) at 19.
At this stage, it's not the parole board making these decisions. Successive Governers have stepped in and reversed the parole boards decisions.

A parole board in California recommended that Patricia Krenwinkel, a former Charles Manson follower and convicted murderer in the notorious 1969 killing spree, should be released, officials said Thursday.
The decision will head to the Board of Parole Hearings Legal Division for review, a spokesperson for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said.

I think that's kinda a good news story. While I'm not sure every person on the planet deserves a chance, and certainly what she participated in was over the top terrible, they also did that at a young age. Hopefully she can live a positive life going forward. Must feel like Shawshank to be released into the world after so many years. Must feel like winning the lottery.

the extent of my knowledge of the Manson family comes from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which is a kickass movie if anyone hasn't seen it.
