I always thought people get diagnosed when younger with ALS, Borje Salming is 71. Terrible news either way, terrible disease too.

My uncle was diagnosed with it when he was in his 70s. ~18 months later, he was gone. His body failed him but his brain was still sharp as a tack. It somehow makes ALS even more cruel…he was well aware of each degenerative step.
All the best to the Salming family. Fond memories of seeing that familiar helmet on HNIC in the ‘80s.

That’s probably the worst part. The brain doesn’t deteriorate like the body. You’re fully aware of what’s going on and there’s nothing you can do.
Probably like sinking in quicksand.

My aunt developed it at 79, and by 81 she was a physical husk of herself, but mentally she was 100%. It took her from putzing around her beautiful garden to bed ridden and 75 pounds and completely disabled in a year. She opted for MAID 2 months ago, 20 months after the onset of symptoms.
I was glad she got to go out on her own terms, and I got the chance to exchange some emails with her near the end, and say good bye. It was amazing to me the courage and acceptance someone facing their final days displays.

A friend got it and died in his early 50s. Seeing his steady deterioration was horrible. Best to the Salmings.

Best of luck to Borje Salming. I remember when he signed with inge hammarstrom for the leafs. the suggestion was that Swedes could go into the corners with eggs in their pockets and come out with all eggs intact. That was obviously untrue and especially when salming had the bad face cut. Leafs legend.

Such a great player and one of the best skaters of his era.
Opened the eyes of a LOT of North American hockey folks at the time. Was a bit of a pioneer for Euros for sure.
The insidiousness of ALS cannot be overstated. Our family has lost 2 great men to the disease now.
RIP Borje.
