Pretty sure that had everything to do with the Oilers pumping the 80s glory and making sure Lowe's face was everywhere in the city, including the meetings with the bureaucrats who are also fans.
Lowe was absolutely front and center in those negotiations, along with the Katz legal team.

Devestating news. The last 9 years we're the best year of my life. Thank you Lowe for your service and dedication to the Oilers. Many fond memories exist because of you. I can't wait for everyone to start posting their favourite Lowe moments so we can re-live the memories.
A big F U to the Bruins for firing Chiarelli and making this possible. An even bigger F U to the league for allowing the Oilers to obtain 4/6 first overall picks thus being able to select Connor Mcdavid. He will be the biggest reason for the Oilers cleaning house and their potential turnaround.
Dark time are ahead. Be prepared for an onslaught of Oiler fans proclaiming McDavid and having new management will bring them the cup.

I think it had much more to do with Katz' shady, yet savvy, business dealings.
Even if he was dragging Lowe along by his chain, do you really think he ever opened his mouth?
Very unfortunate news. I gain no satisfaction from seeing a renewed Battle of Alberta. I could watch this tire fire for another 9 years.
It's interesting though, I don't think these changes coming days after winning the lottery is a coincidence. Someone said it in another thread, but I almost wonder if the McDavid camp told them they needed to make some changes or he'd pull a Lindros. No way we will ever know, but an interesting theory.
I wonder if the Flames fans at Rexall with their WE LOVE KEVIN LOWE signs had anything to do with this? How insulting.

I have a friend who is an Oilers fan and he is still 100% convinced that Kevin Lowe is one of the most respected people in hockey. He was actually shocked that I thought otherwise.
