She's a freelance journalist who was kidnapped in Somalia over a year ago with another journalist.
The kidnappers were demanding a ransom for their release, the asking price was lowered several times.
Very little was heard about her status until a few months back a call presumably from her was released, she talked about poor sanitary conditions she was living in, and asked for the Canadian government to aid in her release.
Nothing was really heard since that call, so her release comes as a pleasant surprise.

Thank God. I never thought the ending would be a good one.

I don't think "we" paid anything, The government had refused to pay and about 2 weeks ago the family held fundraisers to try and raise $1 million. I know this for a fact as a friend of mine gave them $250.00.

I'm happy she's out but man.... I really hope the stories of us paying a ransom are not true. Bad precedence and an incentive for more of this if true.

Really? If it is true that we paid a ransom, yes Its funding terrible things, but doesn't it make you feel kinda proud to be Canadian? Sure you could just forget about her, and not pay a ransom, but they will find money regardless... Shes a Canadian girl from our province... Makes me damn proud to be Canadian if our government did what ever to free her.

If the government paid for it, I'm not proud at all. I guess that makes me cold hearted because I don't think we should be rewarding kidnappers with cash payouts. I'd prefer bullets.

Look up ^^
Once again. The government had refused to pay and about 2 weeks ago the family held fundraisers to try and raise $1 million.
It is against government policy to pay ransoms.

I doubt it was the federal government that paid up but if it was...
I'm not gonna lie, I'm kinda irked by it. Lindhout, from what I read, is an amazing journalist and has done a lot of work in the middle east. But when you goto a country on your own free will, such like Somalia where all the travel advisories from every country is saying don't go there and the threat to westerners is high to get kidnapped, and than actually get kidnapped, don't start blaming the government for not paying a few million to have you released. I'm pretty sure a few months ago the kidnappers released a tape with what is believed to have been Lindhout begging the government for help.
I'm not trying to make light of the situation, I'm sure she has gone through some horrible, horrible things...but ultimately, she set herself up for this situation and given the turmoil in that country and the fact she knew about it (the reason she was working there), she should have fully accepted the risks and been well aware that the Canadian government was not going to help financially.

Proud????! I'm deeply ashamed to be Canadian if ransom was paid. Every Canadian out there now is a walking dollar sign - hey, abduct me!
I'm happy as can be if the Canadian government did everything in its power to free her - as long as they didn't surrender to the criminals and pay the ransom.

Yes thats fair once I though it over. Turns out the government did not pay. Her family raised money. I have a different out look I suppose, as a person who would travel in these places.
Yet I do agree that government shouldn't pay ransoms.

That addition to the story that a ransom was paid, regardless of who paid out is quite troubling.
There are many Canadian journalists working in even the world's most lawless countries. All of them now have a target on their back. I don't blame the family for paying the ransom. If I had a sister or a daughter who was kidnapped, I'd try to free her by any means. It's just a shame that it came down to that and the government couldn't do more with our resources to free her by other means.

I think anyone who ignores warnings and puts themselves at risk of death or kidnapping should be responsible for the costs of the rescue, and any medical treatments. This includes travel to war zones, skiing out of bounds, hiking in avalanche conditions, base jumping, etc.
By bailing this people out we're going against Darwinism, and we don't want to do that do we?
